Pete played 83 games with no 3 pt line and only played 3 years.

Davis is in year 5 and has played 144 games and the guy has a career average of 10.9 3 point attempts a game...

I don't know what incentive the CBI has to invite Detroit Mercy to their tournament this season. The team is not particularly good, so the odds of them playing in more than one game is fairly low. But that doesn't even matter, because it's only the first game for which Detroit Mercy provides any value whatsoever as Davis needs just four points to break the record. Since people don't seem to particularly care about a lifetime achievement award nor Titans basketball, and given that the first round of the tournament is presumably locked behind a FloSports paywall, the only positive I can think of for the CBI is that they "get" to claim that the all-time NCAA points record was broken in their tournament in front of an 800-person crowd and several dozen viewers online.

I hope he breaks it. It's basically the record that's been held forever because no one else in NCAA history was allowed to play how Pete was. He took 54 combined shots/ft per game and was a low percentage chucker the whole time. There's been a lot of people that if you gave them that many shots and didn't really care about wins vs losses, who could have scored how Pete did. Jackson as LSU averaged 30 a game on about half the shot attempts it took for Pete to average 44.

He shot a career 43.8% from FG and 77.5% from free throw.

I'd kill for one of our guards to be shooting nearly 44% from the field.

Pistol has the average scoring records. He could lose the total scoring record. It is what it is. Bernard King is the greatest player ever at Tennessee. But he only played 3 years. Ernie played 4 and was the all-time leading scorer for about 15 years. Then Houston took it away with the help of the 3PL.

Rules change all the time that affect the record book. The shot clock is a big one. Even 3 refs instead of 2 have an impact. There’d be far fewer turnovers in the 60s and 70s using today’s interpretations of traveling and double dribble violations.

You last sentence is something that is glossed so much. They never call walks anymore. It is pathetic. While it is true they call way less fouls now, they still are and always have been completely at the whim of the referees.

Should the NCAA really count stats as records for players getting to play 5 full years during Covid era? I think this is crazy but wonder what you guys believe to be fair. Davis is 3 points short of Pistol Pete and now lobbying to play in the CBI tourney basically so he can break the record.
How could anyone realistically lay claim to a career record when they know they had an extra 30+ games in a 5th season?

Great accomplishment but Antoine Davis only has the record by a number. The all time scoring champ will always be Pistol Pete Maravich.

Pete Maravich is the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 points scored and an average of 44.2 points per game. In 82 total games he scored 3667 points. All of his accomplishments were achieved before the adoption of the three-point line and shot clock, and despite being unable to play varsity as a freshman under then-NCAA rules. He played for three National Basketball Association (NBA) teams until injuries forced his retirement in 1980 following a 10-year professional basketball career.

One of the youngest players ever inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Maravich was considered to be one of the greatest creative offensive talents ever and one of the best ball handlers of all time. He died suddenly at age 40 during a pick-up game in 1988 as a consequence of an undetected heart defect.

I'm sorry but Antoine Davis can GTFO!

Tell me you don’t know what you are talking about without telling me you don’t know what you are talking about.

Maravich could not play varsity as a freshman and did not have the benefit of 3 point shots. No comparison to the Pistol. IMHO, the G.O.A.T.

Pete didn't have the benefit of the 3 point shot

I think the whole debate gives sports fans something to talk about till the fall football season kicks off.

Lol. If a Tennessee player was on verge of breaking Pete’s record, we’d make no excuses or act like it’s tainted because more games are played now.

He also has the added benefit of being the only decent player on a terrible team, of which his dad is the coach. I don't think that last part can be stated enough as far as this record is concerned

Well, to be fair @ that only decent player and daddy for a coach thing. Errrrhmm.
