Any chance we could flip Edwards from Kentucky?

I just don’t see Cal heading to Texas. The Longhorns aren’t blind. They are watching Kentucky underachieve several years in a row under Calipari. Doesn’t seem like they would be that excited to bring him on board. If they are going to try and poach an SEC coach, feels like Oats or Muss would be their targets.

As BTO mentioned, Cal has no buyout, which has to be enticing.

Muss is at a school that supports basketball and has a good bit of cache built up with administration and fans. Might be tough to leave that situation for a job that isn't appreciably better.

Oats has a lot less pressure at Bama than he'd have at Texas, and might just rather wait for a blueblood (Kentucky, perhaps, in this case) to come calling.

It could be that the pool of candidates shrinks quickly to the point that Cal is their best, most realistic option before too long.

What I want to know is, how does Cal have no buyout? That is shocking considering UK is a blue blood.

I think once Cal leaves, they are going to struggle

Because there is really no other place for him to go unless it's the NBA or retires. As long as Cal were winning, there is no threat for another school to poach him.

How does that make sense though? If he's winning, every team is going to want him.

Doesn't even have to be a blue blood... if the money is right, coaches do sometimes make the move

True, but Calipari would be stupid to leave $45 million on the table. He should force Kentucky to fire him and pay him that money and then go to Texas if that’s what he wants.

Could go the Pastner route at Memphis to GTech. Memphis didn't want to pay the $10 million buyout, but Pastner got an offer from GTech. Memphis paid him a chunk of money to take that job.

If UK really wanted him gone, they could negotiate to pay him, say $15 million, and then Cal could sign a new long term deal. He really isn't out a significant amount in the long term, and he gets a better quality of life.

Good point.

And honestly, just being realistic here, I think any team would want Cal has a head coach. I prefer Barnes for sure, however, if a coaching search were to happen tonight....yeah.... lol
I wouldn’t, I would be very disappointed if that was our hire, but it would be better than a no name MM hire, I agree with that…just would rather see us aim a little higher.

Because they got googly eyed and he used that to his advantage, they were worried about him leaving for NBA etc and wanted to sign him to whatever they could.

If he is winning, he isn't leaving UK, regardless if others want him. UK is so much easier to recruit to and has the basketball resources, when it's going well. Cal is getting paid $8-$9 million per year. There are VERY few programs that can or will pay that for a basketball coach right now.

Kentucky isn’t going to do that though and at that point who says the Texas job is open? Texas is probably willing to pay him very well, $10m+/yr, so he’s making that $45m back in no time.

Kentucky is like Alabama football, they aren’t getting outbid…have you seen anyone come close to poaching Saban from Alabama?

The real worry was about him leaving to go to UCLA, where, like Rick Barnes, he had essentially negotiated a deal to take that job, and backed out.

In my viewpoint, I would be shocked if Texas tried to hire him. Texas has had several black eyes the last 5-8 years. After their Beard PR fiasco, I don’t see them hiring someone who clearly has skirted the rules in the past.

Musselman is a potential nightmare as well with some of his behaviors in the last few years.

Musselman just seems like an NBA guy to me and would jump at most any opportunity. I could be totally wrong on that but it's just a feeling I get from him. CLEARLY he can recruit...I'm just not convinced he's a great bench coach...JMO.

I tend to agree with you, BUT, how bad do things get in Lexington? Cal has been losing his fan base over the last few seasons, this might be the final straw!

Get out before the house sets on fire?

I think the house is already on fire. Mitch’s fire department can’t save this one.

Cal has to be at a BB...if he doesn't have top shelf talent he will struggle mightily given his inability to scheme and develop players plus the level playing field on paying players now as @Thunder Good-Oil rightly pointed out.
