It will not be retired, and we have not seen the next player who will have his number retired.

Made more 3s than anyone in Tennessee history, 4th all time in the NCAA, was a huge part of bringing success back to the bball program. He probably deserves it but it won't happen.

Chris Lofton doesn't meet the criteria to have his jersey retired. The only ex-vol that meets this criteria is Dale Ellis and I haven't heard anything that UT is planning on retiring his jersey soon.

while I get what he was a part of for UT bball I just don't place him on the same level as King, Grunfeld, Houston, Ellis, etc

I sure wouldn't mind it being done but he don't meet the criteria. First, you have to wait five years after your UT career is over and you need at least two of these (first team All American, SEC Player of the Year, Member of an Olympic Basketball Team, or be an NBA All Star).

Actually Lofton does meet the criteria. All-American plus an SEC player of the year award meets the requirements. The question is, now that the AD that put the standards and policies in place to retire numbers is no longer at UT will the current AD continue it.

I didn't know about that criteria. Learn something new every day. :hi:

Maybe now with a new athletic director they will look at all criteria required. I don't agree with what success you have as a pro being in there. What you accomplish as a Vol and thats it. However I still don't want to water it down where all kinds of numbers are hanging from the rafters.

I thought Lofton was a preseason All American mention but didn't finish first team after the season.

No it will not.

The next basketball player to have his number retired at UT is Andrew Cross. Andrew is currently in 3rd grade in Norcross, GA. He is going to grow to 6'10" and wear #35.

Skylar McStache is next in line to have his jersey retired.

lol love the kid for his hustle and team play.

Lofton leads the SEC in three pointers made, was on the team that won more games than any other Tennessee team (31), and almost doubled J Smith's career total ( Smith was a hell of a three point shooter). I have no problem with his number being retired. JMO

I was thinking about this yesterday as I was purchasing my second #5 jersey that is now occupied. I love Stokes but that was Lofton's number. Give me one reason why his jersey shouldn't be retired.

I wonder how much someone else playing well in #5 under a new coach is affecting the opinions against Lofton getting retired. It seems like there was a greater wave in favor of retirement not long ago.

Since he meets the criteria and given his role in turning the program around, I am in favor. One thing making me a tad hesitant is the popularity of wearing #5 among players in general though. #53 was easy; few people ever want it.
