Anyone think # 5 Chris Lofton will be retired ?

Lofton played a big role in Pearl's turnaround early in his UT tenure, and he's one of my favorite players. That said, he was the third best player on the 2007-2008 team.

It looked that way at times, but he did have cancer during that offseason.

We weren't that good. If he would not have gotten sick he would have put up crazy numbers his senior year. I love the guy, favorite vol for me.

yeah while he was taking chemo in between games...nearly 26000 posts and that was your dumbest.

I don't think it will (and it shouldn't)

Hopefully Stokes can be that player :crossfingers:

I do not think Stokes will be here long enough to have that kind of an impact.

It will probably be pretty rare to see college players having their numbers retired since so many go pro early.

I wonder what kind of affect this will have on career records since all the good guys leave after a year or two.

Cuonzo said in the beginning that he wants solid 4 year players with a sprinkling of elite 1 or 2 and done players. I believe he can find some 4 year guys that can put up good college numbers but wouldn't project high in the pro game. Trae Golden would be one of those guys. Barring a miracle, he won't be NBA ready till his senior year imo.

Edit: not saying Trae will have his number retired. I'm saying those are the kind of guys that are gonna break records, etc. Chris Lofton didnt project to the pros but was an elite college player that was here for four years.

His senior season (unfortunate because of health issues) was not good. He will be a Vol favorite, but not in the elite class of having the jersey retired. Those guys went on to play at the next level.

Funny how Lofton meets the requirements to have his jersey required, yet some people still think it's their opinion of his time at UT that determines whether it happens or not. The requirements were set, Lofton's career met them, baring some type of felony or other horrendous PR nightmare befalling Lofton, it is only a matter of time and whether or not Hart maintains the current policy that is at question.

On a side not, I remember Lofton's senior season as one where he started slow, but then played very well late in the season. I am not sure where all the "Lofton had a terrible senior year" stuff comes from.

Hopefully UT will never stoop so low as to retire a jersey from such a marginal player as Lofton......

I posted the link in this thread to the UT media guide, SEC POY and 1st team All-American. 2 of the 4 is all that is needed.

Lofton did not make a first team All-America. He made 2nd team 3 times. Has to be coach's, has to be POST-season. All-Wooden is obviously not the same thing as All-American.

He was also battling nut cancer his senior year. And it clearly affected his play. I would retire it.

edit: And people are remembering Lofton way different from how I do. He was easily the best player on the team, and a legit candidate for AA honors, especially going into his senior season. Too bad he had to battle cancer.

edit2: Seriously, he had chemo in the offseason, and opted not to let it leak to his team or media as to not be a distraction. Retire it.

while I get what he was a part of for UT bball I just don't place him on the same level as King, Grunfeld, Houston, Ellis, etc

Disagree.

He was that good.

His senior season somewhat cheapened his career.

I would sooner consider someone like C. J. Watson for this honor. He's seven (7) years into a pro career and he is still very productive, now currently playing significant minutes as Derrick Rose's backup in Chicago.

No he was the best player (before cancer treatment). Jajuan and Ramar being better is laughable. And I loved Jajuan, but he was inconsistent. Lofton was not.

You must not remember much from those seasons, especially if you think I was referencing Ramar Smith.
