What is fascinating to contemplate (in the Land of What If's?) is how tantalizingly close we came to moving up to #3 (or possisbly #2) in the next poll.
#2 NC State and #5 Baylor both lost. If KY hadn't choked against #6 Louisville and we hadn't had the quarter from Hades and could have knocked off #3 Stanford, we would have passed all four of those teams (and #7 Conn's loss would have broken that tie). Boom...we would be the new #3.
And if the voters decided to punish AZ for their COVID cancel against a top opponent, they very well might have elevated us to #2. Even if KY hadn't hung on to beat Louisville, they might have moved both Louisville and us to #2 and #3 respectively.
Do I think we would actually be the second- or third-best team in the country right now? Not really (although we can see the potential to join those ranks if weaknesses are shored up), but it sure would have been fun while it lasted, if only to watch certain people and certain deserters eat crow. And the recruiting benefits and respect from wbb watchers would have been priceless. To go from "Season is lost!" bemoaning to "Top Three" in a little over a month...well, it would have been epic.
Hopefully, the Lady Vols can use the possibilities as motivation to take this thing up a few notches. Horston, Walker, and Puckett were very mature and analytical in their postgame comments, correctly identifying the aspects that clearly need work in order to win games like Saturday. If Rae is able to come back and get up to speed relatively quickly and the offense can seamlessly adjust to her return and improve, we can again be an elite threat.
We knew there would be bumps in the road, but we also have gotten a glimpse of what can be with this team. The drive-by posters and Kellie-haters now look ridiculous and can be totally ignored while we can enjoy the optimistic outlook that comes with a team and coaching staff full of fighting spirit. We can stay calm during games instead of being frustrated with lack of effort, and we can believe that the team will respond positively to adversity. That's a culture change right there for everyone including the fan base.
