God, I hate the "he surprised people last year, but he won't this year" crowd.
After a few games, coaches knew the kid could freakin' play. They knew he could improvise. Not much of a "surprise". How about y'all just admit the kid can play football?
Furthermore, no, the Aggies are here to stay. In fact, I can see them being like a modern-day Florida. Up until their rise to prominence, Miami and Florida State ran the Sunshine State. Now, it's Gator country. The Longhorn crowd is foolish to think that this can't happen in Texas. Texas A&M has built-in geographic advantages (like Florida), they have first-rate facilities, and their fanbase is strong. They're not a flash in the pan.
He can play backyard ball...yes. That's what he did to win last year. Big difference. Give him a playbook he needs to stick to and he'll struggle. Just like his 2-3 interceptions in their Spring Game. There is also a big difference in preparing during the season for a player like him and preparing for him through the spring and summer. Don't forget that from the 2nd qtr on Bama shut him down. Aggies defense won that game. Give UF and LSU time to prepare they have the talent to take care of business.
A&M will not surpass UTX in TX anytime soon recruiting wise. Even OU can cherry pick better in TX than the aggies can. Heck Manziel wanted to play for the longhorns, and wasn't recruited. Still wishes he had otherwise wouldn't be throwing the Longhorn sign around. UTX is where the majority of top talent want to go, then OU, top out of state programs, then college station. Just is the way it is. The aggies will have to sustain top level for a long time so kids start dreaming about playing for them. Cause right now that's just not the case.
