It seems unlikely. This team has found ways to play really well against really tough opponents. Our biggest problems have come against underrated opponents. If we can keep playing tough and win the games we should win and keep improving.... We will probably still come up short. But who knows? The beauty of college basketball is that anybody can get in the tournament. We would just have to get hot at the right time.
If we are playing well and won the SEC tournament and got in as an 8 or 9 seed, I think we could potentially be a nightmare match up for teams. We would have to be playing great just to get there. For this to happen it would most likely mean:
A) Stokes would have become a force in the post on both sides of the ball. This seems inevitable. Which is good news for us, and really discouraging news for everyone else in the SEC who was looking forward to watching us struggle for the next few years. Not happening.
B) Golden would have settled in his role and become an elite pg. Stokes presence will take pressure off everyone and in turn, make their job easier. If he just takes what the defense gives him he could be great.. not just good, but great.
C) Jerrone Maymon plays as aggressively on offense as he did against UK, every game. If he does, he is almost impossible to stop. He either scores or gets fouled when he goes that hard to the rim. Also, he would be perfect from the free throw line if he would just bend his knees. Every time he does he makes. Every time time he doesn't he bricks. Such an easy solution.
D) Defensive intensity is carried over from game to game. Even the games that aren't circled on the schedule.
E) Kenny Hall establishes himself as a reliable scoring option off the bench. He has shown flashes of incredible development over the past year. I just think he has no idea that he could absolutely take over a game if he wanted to. I think he could potentially be dominant on offense.
F) We just need solid contribution from the bench outside of this. Like I said earlier, I think Stokes is a game changer. Constant pressure to create points is slightly lifted off the shoulders of everyone. Which should open up opportunities for easier shots for other people, Tatum, McRae, McBee, Swiperboy, etc... When they get their chances, they will have to take advantage. Bottom line.
I'm pretty excited about this season. This should be a fun team to watch from here on out. Even if we don't make the big dance, I would even be excited to watch them play in the NIT (This would obviously be less exciting). I think we may have dug ourselves too big of a hole to climb out of. It will definitely be interesting to see what this team does from here on out.
