Are the Vols an NCAA Tournament Team?

close only counts in horse shoes and grenades. A lost is a lost no matter if you lose by one or thirty-one:clapping:

If you look I say played them close and well. I knOw what a loss is and counts as, all I'm saying is we played those teams very well and it would be a battle for them were no longer a push over.

Am I happy with that, that's a tough question. Of course I want to win that doesn't need to be addressed but I'm also realistic. I guarantee you didn't think we would outplay uk for 3/4 and only lose by 5(?). I guarantee you didn't think we would go toe to toe with duke in Maui, and the next night take Memphis to double ot. No I'm not happy about losing, but I am happy with what we've accomplished and how the future looks.

I wasn't discussing how I feel about close games you've completely changed the topic. All I was saying and lost agreed, if we were to make it in as an 8/9 and win and play duke or uk in round 2 we present matchup problems with our style.

no .nit this year. ncaa next year. just too young. woolridge and tatum will be gone next year, and our chances get better without them. chievious will be playing next year, also.

Ah i knew I was wrong. The late game flurry of 3's changed it up a bit. Still makes me feel good knowing that we played the number 2 team in the country toe to toe.

8 pt lead blown. Without some bad shooting by UK at the end and some "lucky" threes as well...coulda been 7-10 pt uk win. Great game.

Anyway, UT has to beat UK, Uconn and make a deep run in the sec tourney...to be a bubble team.

Lost all but one of them. You don't get in the NCAA tournament based on close loses.

Yeah I agree. But I went into the last three games 1) expecting to go 0 for 3. 2) Expecting to get blown out at least twice. 3) Feeling really negative about our program as a whole.

After those three games, my outlook has changed completely. This was never a team that was going to win a title. I knew that before the season started. But if this can be a team that is fun to watch and can be thorn in other teams side in the SEC. Maybe make an SEC tournament run? I can live with that. Things are looking much better than they did 2 weeks ago.

and with woolridge mcbee and golden all hitting wide open 3's in the last 5 minutes, and kenny making a damn dunk its a ball game. regardless, we lost by 3.

i found a couple interesting notes thought id share...

1. seth davis said he expects tennessee to make it into the ncaa tournament. says they will surprise some people and make the tourney.

2. i dont remember where i read this but found it interesting...the ncaa committee has admitted that they take injury into account when figuring up ncaa teams. will they take into account tennessee's roster with and without stokes. say tennessee closes the season 10-4, goes 9-4 in sec play and beats uconn so they look 10-5 with stokes playing and maybe win a game or two in sec tourney, does this help their chances.

I believe with the addition of Stokes the Vols are one of the best 65 teams in the country. However, they are going to have to pull a few more upsets to get their RPI up high enough to get in the tourney. THey can definitely start by beating GA tomorrow night and then pulling the upset agaisnt the defending National Champion UCONN Huskies on Sat. If they can win 9 or 10 more in the regular season and then make a run in the SEC Tourney it's definitely possible.

yea if the committee is willing to consider the addition of stokes and how we look different they may look past thosese early season losses. that could be huge if they are willing to do that, then it is not that unthinkable of a task. as you said this week has to be 2-0 if we want to set ourselves up in decent position for a run.

Being a top-65 team doesn't mean you deserve an NCAA tourney spot. I don't know exactly how many there are, but you have to consider the automatic bids from the mid-majors. Therefore, you probably have to be a top 45-50 team. I love our team and potential, but it would take an unrealistic amount of wins for us to dance this year. Hope I'm wrong.

it goes 31 division champions, and now with the extended field 37 at large bids, therefore we would be in the 37 at large bids area most likely. the problem is when teams that shouldnt win the conference championship do, and so you get 2 members from that conference and thus taking away an at-large bid. i honestly think we get in with a...18-13 record reg season, if we beat uconn and then win 2 in the sec tourney and lose in championship, a final season record of 20-14. i think the committee considers stokes and give us the pass, now this scenario is saying 10-6 in sec and beating uconn. possible not probable.

Intriguing. Thanks for the insight. I wouldn't put it past Cuonzo to make something happen, but I agree with your assessment of possible but not probable. Of course, things can easily be shaken up in the SECt. If there are a couple upsets by other teams, it's not impossible that we could get to the championship game as the favorite.

Outside of UT going on a blistering run or winning the SEC tourney (yeah right) this team is going nowhere but the NIT. Their guard play is still inconsistent and experience and talent is lacking.

Everyone knew that this year would be a mulligan for Martin after everything that went on. Even though the record is at 8-9, the team looks to be progressing much better than most people thought.

We'll know more about the makeup of this team after tomorrow night's game. UGA isn't that good. It's a winnable road game. We'll see if we can get our first road win.

the only team i really say damn this team is going to be really hard to beat is uk. do i feel better after the game saturday, but still is an insanely good team. the good side is that cal has made it known he doesnt care about the sec t and if he needs to rest his guys or not put too much effort into it, whatever. uk could easily not be in the championship game and if thats the case who knows what could happen. i still dont think we have seen the last of this team i fully expect them to make a run and make things interesting at some point...just a feeling. maybe it will start tomorrow night, could be the start of a nice little run.

im just curious, who do you see on our remaining schedules as automatic losses?

W @uga
UCONN
L@ vand
W auburn
L @uk
W georgia
W south carolina
L @florida
W arkansas
W @bama
W ole miss
W @s carolina
W @lsu
W vanderbilt

11-5 in sec, 10-6 to be safe. i guess the biggest surprise of my picks is bama at bama, im just not all that impressed by them. vandy at home just depends what team shows up as well.

call me biased, stupid, optimistic, idiotic or all of the above but this i see as being very plausible.

I'm having trouble figuring Bama out. They are probably the SEC team I've watched the most besides us. They remind me of Pearl's teams, very athletic and uptempo. Anthony Grant is a good coach too. If we beat them, we will have had to force our slower tempo and eliminate fast breaks. I gotta admit that Mitchell is pretty fun to watch.
