Are we a playoff team now?

The fact that we're even having this conversation, and it's relevant and not entirely speculative a year and a half removed from that dumpster fire is almost impossible to believe.

Here are the scenarios as I see it:

1. Win out - obviously in, and as #1 seed
2. Beat UGa and lose SEC title game - In as #3 or 4 seed
3. Lose to UGa, end up 11-1, and they run the table - In as #3 or 4 seed
4. Lose to UGa, end up 11-1, and Bama beats UGa in Atlanta - we'll need help, as the chances of them putting three SEC teams in is hard to imagine. We'll need Michigan to lose to OSU or Clemson to lose a game somewhere. If Michigan beats OSU and loses the B10 title game, we're in.
5. Lose to UGa, end up 11-1, and Ole Miss goes unbeaten and beats UGa in Atlanta - same as above.

All I'm concerned with right now is beating UK and getting to Athens undefeated.

Truth is as of right now we are but there’s a lot of football left to be played. I don’t think we’re the best team in college football right now but we are certainly the most dangerous.

No question UT is a playoff team. If you look at the ESPN pickers, that is telling you UT doesn’t even need to beat GA or win the SEC now.

Absolutely a playoff team at this point. Best resume in the country hands down, with 4 top 25 wins in 6 games. We just beat Bama without our 2nd best player (Tillman), without our starting safety, and without our best CB (Hadden). If we can get healthy I think Georgia will be an easier game than Bama. Georgia doesn't have Bryce Young being houdini and throwing for 455 yards. I don't think Georgia's offense can match us point for point the way Bama did.

In position to be a playoff team but cannot have any slip ups along the way. One bad game and your outside looking in again. Only loss they can sustain and still be ok is Georgia.

Well Clemson and Syracuse are both undefeated for the ACC, TCU undefeated for the big 12, UCLA undefeated for the pac 12 and Oregon hasn't lost a Pac 12 game. OSU and Michigan still haven't lost either.

TCU, UCLA, and Syracuse have a very low chance to run the table, obviously if they do, they are almost certainly in. I just don't see it. No chance a one loss Oregon could ever get in over us especially given the way they loss to UGA and the strength of the Pac 12 versus the SEC. The ones I listed are the contenders barring a miracle

Could be one of those years it’s better to have 1 loss and not play in the SEC championship game. Bama did it and I think won the NC.

The only teams that should be capable of beating us now during the regular season are Georgia and, if we beat Georgia, the SEC West champion (likely Alabama again). Were we to lose to either team, we would end the regular season with one loss and that to a top SEC team. At 11-1 or 12-1 in the SEC, are we almost certain to be a playoff team, even if we lose to Georgia or in the SEC championship game?
Only teams with playoff chance are:

Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss
Clemson, Syracuse
Ohio St, Michigan, Penn St, Illinois
UCLA, USC, Oregon
TCU, Oklahoma St

That’s it.
Ole miss, Syracuse, Illinois, Penn St and Okla St are long shots who have won because of their schedule

SEC champ is definitely in
Big Ten champ is definitely in
That leaves the two spots for:
11-1 Tennessee (if loss to UGA)
12-1 Tennessee (if loss to Bama in SEC)
11-1 Georgia (if loss to UT)
11-1 Ohio St (if loss to Michigan)
12-1 Michigan (if loss in Big 10 title game)
11-1 Michigan (if loss to Ohio St)
Undefeated Clemson
12-1 Clemson (as long as loss isn’t in ACC title game)
Undefeated TCU
Undefeated UCLA
12-1 USC as Pac12 champ

If we go 11-1 we’re in. Our resume speaks for itself, and honestly it ain’t even close.
I agree but there are scenarios that make it less likely.

12-1 Bama sec champ
12-1 UGA runner up
13-0/12-1 Ohio St
13-0 Clemson
12-1 Michigan runner up

It depends on how the rest of CFB shakes out. ACC, pac 12, B1G, and Big 12 all have undefeated teams. Too many possibilities for anything definitive at the moment.

As Sami and others have suggested, if we lose to Georgia and Georgia loses the SEC title game to, say, bama, we could have a problem even at 11-1. We need Clemson to get beat--as that team is in an easy conference and could go undefeated, and if they are undefeated they will be in the playoff along with Georgia and, probably, bama, as bama will have beaten georgia in the SEC title game. That leaves the osu/michigan loser, plus us and maybe a Big 12 team. What if TCU goes undefeated? I think they'll get beat--and let's hope that the do. We'd deserve to make the playoff at 11-1--but the committee would have to show tremendous guts to take 3 SEC teams as doing so would outrage the Big10--and the osu/michigan loser. The TV networks would be all for it--but don't think they'd have any influence. We could very well get screwed, which is why I expect us to beat georgia.

Can the SEC get 3 teams in the playoff?
In this stupid format? Why not? It's still a popularity contest with the bias of the committee in full display. All by design

The NCAA doesn't want a true championship where the contestants are determined by being conference champions.

12-1 UGA runner up
13-0/12-1 Ohio St
13-0 Clemson
12-1 Michigan runner up

I can't see Michigan getting in at 12-1 if they lose the Big 10 championship game. If Michigan were to lose the CCG the more likely option IMO would be taking Ohio State at 11-1 (presuming that they lost close to Michigan) and there is precedent for this since the playoff has done it to the Big 10 before. Michigan losing in the CCG would mean that they lost to some absolute dog from the Big 10 western division (or whatever they call it) and that's likely to remind people of their abject humiliation in last year's playoff, and it's going to take a while to wash the stink off of that one.

I think Clemson is the only team from the ACC that can get in and probably only at 13-0, although it looks like their SOS is ticking up somewhat so maybe they could sneak in at 12-1 ACC champ based on prior years performance. I just can't see Syracuse getting in unless they are undefeated and there are no other good options, would be like taking Cincinnati last year. Same for Big 12 champ whoever that may be.

Pac-12 is probably out unless USC wins out, they might be able to make a case at 12-1. Oregon at 12-1 Pac-12 champ might be able to squeak in but they will need to mitigate that week 1 blowout loss.

I just don't see any way that the playoff takes three SEC teams this year even though it might be the right thing to do.

UT with a close loss to UGA would get in over Oregon with that early season debacle in Athens. UCLA still has that Oregon team and their cross-town rival to get past. TCU has K State and Texas left, among others. It will be shocking if they stay undefeated. OSU and Michigan have to play each other; only the winner of that game will have a chance of getting in. It’s entirely possible that the playoff will again be 2 SEC teams along with an ACC and a B1G. Heck, it could be three SEC teams and OSU or Mich. if Clemson drops a game.

Anyone else nervous we droP a random game like UK?
Ya know, years passed I’d definitely been worried. But when we got behind or lost momentum V Bama, team didn’t even blink. And I’m not joking…I was ready for it. But to fight they way they did, I’m not scared. They definitely showed some grit and just did their jobs with some swagger.
