Defensively we’re better but the offense is lagging behind the 2022 team IMO. Not sure if part of our problem on O is that defensive coordinators have had a couple of seasons to look at Heupel’s offense and run more effective schemes. But Nico is not as effective as Hooker yet and no one on the OL is close to Darnell Wright…

That 3-3-5 really cramped our offense output as far as bombs and large numbers. Other DC’s may have caught on and schemed their D’s effectively.

Seems when Spurrier came into the SEC with his fun and gun, it took a while for DC’s to catch up. IIRC, Chavis was taking DB’s and bulking them up and making LB’s out of them. That was so they could run with the RB’s and keep up with slot receivers.

Man I miss the days when we had 6’2 255-265lb LB’s and FB’s like William Howard!

The 22 team was certainly a lot more exciting to watch than this yrs team. Hope that changes tomorrow but don't expect it. Think the 22 team was better because most of the games you knew we could outscore the other team even with the bad D. This year so far you have the hope the D can make the few points the O scores stand up.

Check with me at the end of the year.

The 2022 team had its share of great games (Alabama, LSU, Clemson, Kentucky, Missouri, Vanderbilt)

and struggles (Georgia, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, Florida)

Thus far into the season, do you think we are as good as we were in 2022?
No. The '24 defense is better, but the '24 offense is waaaay worse. We really caught lightning in a bottle in '22 with Hendon Hooker and Jalin Hyatt. Hooker, in particular, was a truly special player that unfortunately doesn't come along very often.

Offense is worse
Defense is better
The difference is Hooker had an idea of what he was going to do when getting lined up for the next play. Last 2 QBs have had to check with the coach before running the play because they have trouble reading the defense.

We are a better TEAM by a lot considering our defense is lights out and we have a DB that can play on Sunday’s. O-line is worse and QB is worse (he will get better as time goes) and it’s unfair because you are comparing him to Hooker. But yes better overall team.

Loved Willian Howard - one of my favorite all time Vols.

Spurrier changed the SEC and as you mentioned - teams started bulking up DBs to have super fast LBs that could cover…and then we played Nebraska and they played old school power football and ran it down our throats. It’s always interesting to watch how the game evolves and how coaches respond to new innovation.

It’s funny now but I can remember when we literally ran out of receivers! I want to say it was around the time we had Kent and Nash that Chavis had to pull some WR’s to fill the DB hole and, we literally had no depth at WR.

Good old days however because we were winning all but one (maybe two) games a year.

I watched us play those cornfed behemoths down in Miami. Had Peyton not hurt his knee, we still wouldn’t have fared any better.

More similar to 2021 team. Defense better. Offensive line worse. Quarterback worse. Could improve to 2022 level but remains to be seen.

We beat a lessor Bama team but got beat by a lessor Georgia team. Is the Arkansas loss as bad as, the same or, worse than the ‘22 USCe loss?

South Carolina was worse . They scored 63 points. But that seems more and more like Connor stallions , and his lackeys doing then anything else.
22 team offense, 24 team defense. Why can’t we have both

i think this team would probably beat the 22 team as crazy as that may sound to some.

Look I know our D had a really bad night but come on that’s crazy 💀
It is what it is man, same results for the 2022 crew against last years team as well. The good news is we will be that 2022 team when Nico has his final year here (probably pro early). Hendon had played like 5? Full seasons before that year. He would just throw bombs on us while we go 3 and out over and over

Nico would light up that 2022 defense though, well if WRs catch for him lol

Ahaha yeah 😆 i disagree but that is a valid point at the end. I know they'd be throwing deep all game and connecting them with our WR-U at the time and our current offense would be shook all game seeing that.
7.2 yards a play in 2022, now in big games I get 2022 level excited when we score 2 tds
