Are we the Penn State of the SEC?

Things aren’t crumbling. Our program hasn’t peaked. Our program isn’t regressing.

The reality is that every time you add a win, things get exponentially harder to add the next win.

If you hypothetically start at 4-8, it’s not as hard to go from 4-8 to 6-6 as it is to go from 10-2 to 12-0.

There’s false expectation here if linear growth and then we panic and lose our minds when that doesn’t occur. “We’ve won 10 before! Why didn’t we win 11! Where is the linear growth I demand! Clearly we are stagnant! We are Penn State!”

When the reality is it takes a lot to go from 10 to 11 or 12 wins.
That is a good point, and true.

The concerns about peaking for me come from recruiting. We are recruiting decently but not in the top 10 nationally and #8 in the SEC, literally the middle of the pack.

This season, we have less than 50% blue chip players on the roster.

But everything you’ve mentioned has only trended upward since CJH arrived. This is his best recruiting class. This is his best blue chip ratio. This recruiting class is well above 50% and the team next year maybe also.

So it’s hard to proclaim anything has peaked given continual progress we see in your areas of concern

Of course it's not the end all but without the automatic bids there's no Arizona state or smu or Clemson. Look at the top 6 bcs rankings and it's the ones that have a bunch of talent. I'll bet any amount of money that nobody out of the top 8 just in recruiting will win a championship in the foreseeable future. When it comes down to it talent trumps coaching but when you have talent and a coach like Saban or Kirby you start stringing trophies

I think y’all are very similar to Penn State, if we are talking this year - great defense, a good QB ( I’d take nico over Adler), and a solid run game - Ohio State just had a better roster top to bottom - and it showed against both teams - I think from what I witnessed in Columbus, that Tennessee is on the right path - it doesn’t happen overnight - When Urban came here he set it up nicely for Day, to continue to grow and build upon what was already there - trust me, Tennessee will be fine - too big of a fan base, tradition, and history for it not to be - don’t let one game fool you, the stars are aligned for Ohio State this past weekend…let me ask you this, if you play Michigan tomorrow, how bad do you beat them? Im thinking by at least 2 TDs, something we couldn’t do - so move on, get better (which you will), and learn from it - I’ve seen my Buckeyes get blown out plenty of times in the past few years, regroup
And move on. Cheers

True

I still think we would've gotten waxed at Neyland but it would've been much closer
I think it would of been different at Neyland - y’all are absolutely insane, and we probably would of had no more than 5k fans there - we got lucky to play one more home game and for our seniors (who gave everything they had for 4 years), one last game at the shoe to go out on top, after the Michigan debacle…I don’t think anyone was beating tOSU the other night, given the circumstances.

It certainly would've been different.

But I think we would've lost 35-20 instead of 42-17 and you guys would've exposed our secondary

I don't disagree, but the point is we've struggled and haven't beaten any elite teams. Just pretty good teams. Which is not a bad place to be, but fans always want to see the program take that next step and we seem stuck at "pretty good"
CJH made the necessary immediate impact to get on track quickly and stop the bleeding and start winning. By and large we are back to winning the games we should and some that are not expected. The 2nd part of the equation is a bit tougher. Not fond of the Kirby played for a NC in his 2nd year comparison. Richt was an excellent coach and left a full house for Kirby. CJH had the tougher road and a full rebuild of roster and culture. I want to see him and the team make the next jump, but I am in no way disappointed with where the Vols have progressed to.

To me, outside of the SEC, we are most comparable to Penn St, Michigan, USC, Nebraska, Clemson, and Florida St. Within the SEC we practically mirror LSU. Keep in mind, you can't just talk about the last 10-15 years, it's historically.

Can we maybe have this discussion if Heupel is here 10+ years and hasn’t won anything? We’ve at least beaten Bama twice, which is the number of times Franklin has beaten Ohio State.

'Beating Bama' twice includes two Bama teams who did not make the SEC title game. That's not a very high bar when you get past the rivalry stuff..

Frankly, we seem more like the Dallas Cowboys of College Football.

Large and loud fanbase that likes to talk smack but the team NEVER backs them up and can't win any meaningful Championship.

Bro Penn state had the absolute gift of a path. Had they won the B1G they'd have been the one blown out last night and Franklin getting booed again.
