Much better than Butch. Fickell at least had a successful stint with Meyer at Ohio state.
Will Briles end up at Liberty, Texas Tech or possibly Auburn?
Art Briles resigns as coach of Mount Vernon HS
I would take a 65 year old Briles over a 58 year old Chaney.I have nothing against Art Briles and, in spite of the very obvious baggage, would have personally loved to have him on the sidelines in Knoxville after parting ways with Butch.
That being said, it was never going to happen and is even less likely to occur five seasons after his last coaching appearance. All things considered, there is not a single Power 5 program in the country who would hire 65-year-old Briles today as a coordinator (let alone a head coach). Liberty is literally the only Division 1 school that would give Briles a head coaching job right now and, currently, they do not have a vacancy; if Freeze sticks it out there for one more season (and I have no idea whether or not Auburn is legitimately considering hiring him, though I have my doubts), I think that the game will have officially moved past Briles.
That being said, the timing of this resignation is certainly a bit curious.
Keep your eyes on Lubbuck. Briles played four years at Houston but got his degree from Tech after his parents died in a traffic accident on their way to Dallas to watch him play SMU. He is a West Texas boy, notice the accent, and they love him out there. The Pirate's best running game at Tech was when Art was his RB coach. They still remember that.I have nothing against Art Briles and, in spite of the very obvious baggage, would have personally loved to have him on the sidelines in Knoxville after parting ways with Butch.

I have incredibly conflicted feelings about that scandal. It seems more nuanced and less straightforward than what happened at Penn St. I have no doubt that terrible things happened there, but I also think in the desire to "do something about it" some people, including potentially Briles, went down for stuff they might not have done. It is still odd to me that Baylor paid Briles to go away. That is indicative of them not having much on him. One of the guys accused (Shawn Oakman) refused a plea deal and was found not guilty at trial. I'm not really sure what to believe about that situation.I heard him tell the story about him not seeing his parents at the stadium before the game and he knew something was wrong. I like Art Briles and think he got a raw deal. If I were a coach, I'd pay to spend a few days with him.
