Article: Why Vols Won't Miss Tiny Richardson

You need more than one option. It is just a bad proposition to put all your hopes in one guy who might not work out. It IS where they are. Dooley didn't get a good LT HS prospect after Tiny and Jones has not yet in his two classes as far as I know.

LT's are unique athletes and great ones are pretty rare. You CAN build them or you can find them. Jones is unfortunately having to find one... or hopefully two.

Can't remember...was Dan Skipper being recruited last year as a LT?? All I know is that he was a stud on Arky's special teams this year blocking a few FGs. If LT is his future he would have been nice to have on the roster.

Side notes after reading this thread:

Bray was a cancer that did his own thing, and wanted the big play to maintain his "swag". He is more to blame for loses than people want to admit. No one was glad to see his talent go, but his attitude yes. If there's no truth to that he wouldn't have gone undrafted. Not going to be the case with Tiny. Lack of upperclassmen is a major issue that dooley went through and it takes time to dig out of that hole. Hope "The Legion of the Miserable" can give CBJ enough time.

Second...bleacher report is no better than anyone on here writing an article. Cause...well...that's pretty much what it is.

"the entire o line was overrated but we need to move on by having the best o lineman leaving early"

lulz, yep.

I will admit that I was not aware that Tiny "has been battling a microfracture in his knee." How widely publicized was this injury?

Neither was I. So as to the publicity of it, it would seem it wasn't known much if at all.

I remember reading that Skipper's main recruiter was Sam Pittman, one of the few coaches on Dooley's staff that I thought might have deserved to be retained. When Arkansas hired him, Skipper changed his commitment within a day or two. Would have been nice if we could have kept him, because he was probably one of the best athletes the old staff had on the board. Regrettable loss? Sure. But it goes with the territory during a staff change.

As to your comments on Bray, I agree. His attitude, while in many opinions was partially justifiable with contending with Dooley, was duly noted by all 32 NFL scouting staffs. I don't know for sure, but when KC picked him up through FA, it wasn't surprising to me that it was on a team with a couple of well regarded ex-Vols on the team.

I just hope Tiny's knee problem does not affect him during the combine. Hopefully, it heals up by then. I hate losing him, but I feel he will be selected in the first two rounds if he grades well in the pre-draft workouts.

I've been critical of Team 117's O-Line, but much of the issue with their lesser performance compared to last year has to do with a change in blocking scheme. Moving from a pass blocking to a read blocking structure kind of through these guys off a bit. They did a better job run blocking this past season, but I really think "option/zone" blocking threw off their timing therby resulting in a lot of missed blocks.

The key issue is who this coaching staff is recruiting, and why these new recruits have real shot at playing right away. Our past lines had size and strength, whereas the new line will be built more on strength and speed. Let the debate begin on whether this will pay the dividends in the SEC that everyone hopes that it does.

See this link for a great summary on the kind of blocking scheme this staff is trying to migrate this team toward: Football 201: Understanding the Zone Blocking Scheme - Behind the Steel Curtain.

If we get this all hashed out and decide Tiny stays, do the NFL suits crumple up the handwritten notebook page where he wrote I'M GONE NFL.... love, Mr. Tiny and we cue We Are the Champions by Queen?
