Worst crash you ever seen?

Worst crash in person was Michael Waltrip at Bristol in the Busch car. (Yeah it was a long time ago). I was young and just remember being able to hear the car hit the wall on the back stretch over the rest of the cars actually running. I remember thinking he was dead and there was no way he could walk away.

Worst crash on TV would either have to be Richard Petty when he got into the fence and torn both ends of the car up or Wheldon's. Wheldon's may take the cake just because every time I see pictures or video from that crash I know he didn't survive. That whole race was just too much. The laps they ran after they found out Wheldon had died and Dario sitting in his car sobbing was plain ole errie.

Tom Pryce, in Kyalami I believe. That or Willy T running over a marshal in Vancouver is my choice.

Completely forgot about the Willy T accident. I remember you could see him go under the tire and come ou the other side.

Yeah, race safety was appalling back then.

Sadly most safety improvements have been reactive, meaning someone had to die before things changed.

This is so true. Major recent example is Dale Sr. With Sr. it was everyone being required to wear the Hans device and moving the driver more towards the center of the car. Also the safer barriers become more prevalant.

Hell, he was wearing a open face still, and wore his belts really loose also.

I think before the end of the decade open wheel cars will get either a canopy or something of the ilk to protect driver's heads.

There was already some small talk about doing this before Wheldon died. After he passed the talk got louder and faster because of the way he died. I don't really agree with the canopy talk. I think the canopy takes away from the whole open wheel car allure. Wheldon's death had many factors that were involved other than not having a canopy. I honestly don't think even if he had one he would have survived. There were way too many cars on the track that day and several drivers have said that.

I think a canopy could save a lot of lives. Not necessarily Wheldon's though.

I have no issue with canopies however. Safety is paramount, why do jet fighters have canopies? Protection from debris.

Biplane pilots used to have open cockpits :p

You wouldn't be able to breathe even at low altitudes at the speeds jets are capable of these days.

Completely agree that safety should be number one. I just don't know if the canopies are the way to go. I haven't really read that much about it so I don't know what other opitions are out there, if any.

Anybody who supports canopies or enclosed cock pits needs to quit watching open wheel racing immediately. They will never get it and are merely wasting their time.

There's already a series for that and fenders.

wow that is great. I raced the alcohol carts. Raced quads a couple of times also.
