Assuming we get the extra 7 spots

Just goes to show how bad our roster is when you consider holes all over the field and on both sides of the ball. I'd have to think this staff will be making WR a priority along with LB.

Vol calls said max would be about 80 scholarship players next year. It would take about 3 years to reach max 85 .
Sorry if I don’t believe what Vols calls says. I don’t think it takes that long. Lol. Especially if we can sign over thirty. That means we could be around 55 scholarship players before signing 30. Then we have 85. So…..

I really don’t know how many extra. Some of the portal guys we brought in this year might be forward counted against next year. Only the coaches know how many spots are available.
Looking at 247, we signed 17 and took 10 transfers that count against the 25. We let four out their NLI so that would put us at having 2 available extra signees (I believe). We could sign 27 players and take seven transfers for a total of 34 transfers players. I imagine we will try to fill as many spots as possible and sign/take at least 30 players.

Seems like a lot, but who knows. Here's the thing - yes you want to win now, but it could really hurt future depth too, so that's the risk.
Not a huge risk in the portal unless you get a lot of guys with only 1-2 years of eligibility.

We don’t get 7 transfer spots unless 7 transfer out this year

So I have a question about the 7 spots and the transfer portal in general. Does the 7 extra spots mean you can only sign 7 guys total from the portal? Meaning, theoretically, could Heupel sign like 10-12 guys from the portal? And that would mean 3-5 guys count towards the 25 limit?

I think the portal will become a huge part of classes. I think you'll see lots of player movement. I think it can help and hurt. You'll have the upper echelon schools recruiting the best players on lower level teams. (I realize that's against the rules but, really?) Obviously it can help a bunch too if you have talented guys wanting a fresh start. Interesting to follow.

I’m pretty sure two have already transferred this year in Middleton and Wideman. And we will lose at least five to ten more. We will have no problem getting the max.

They don't count unless they transfer after this season. See the link I posted earlier in this thread.

"Schools will only be allowed to replace players who enter the portal after either the end of the institution’s fall term or Dec. 15, 2021, whichever is earlier, a source told The Athletic."

Even still… we will have seven transfers. I’m not worried.

Simply keep taking from the portal, but less and less as you are able. Rebuilding should be quite a bit easier than in the past.

They have to hit the portal after the season is over to count towards the extra 7 scholarships. At least that's the way I interpreted the new rules.

LB should be #1,
We get all of our LB's back (maybe not Page). If we can add 1 stud LB from the portal, plus Mitchell back from injury, we should be good there not counting any high school kids we sign. We need OL and another edge rusher or two. I do believe there is some young talent that will show up after another year of development at multiple positions though.

That doesn’t give me a great deal of hope we can stop anyone with a slightly mobile QB on 3rd and long next year.
Unless we upgrade through the portal

You're forgetting that all of these guys had little if any game experience before this season. Our starters (Banks and Beasley) didn't play the position in high school, and this defense is completely different from what Pruitt ran. Then they both missed Spring practice. I expect to see major improvement in year 2 at every defensive position. Mitchell was the only LB with much real game experience and he was trying to play with a shoulder that needed surgery.

That’s where we differ. I’m not forgetting.
I don’t see the main problem being lack of experience or new to this system.
I see to many times where they are in a position to make a tackle and don’t because the offensive players are too elusive for their athletic talent.
Lack of experience problems would indicate not being in position to make the tackle.
You won’t get major improvement in athletic talent. It has its limits

I think we’re ok at we but we need for Hyatt to get more involved so we have a good chance at his brother. We definitely need help on the offensive line and linebackers.Did I mention eff HT?

I've seen far less athletic linebackers make those plays routinely for many years. Being in position (the proper location) and being in position (proper body position and technique) are two different things. The latter comes from experience.

For portal attrition (32), how many portal guys are we going to sign? And at what positions?

I say up to 14 (including Juco):
- 1 backup qb
- 1 backup RB
- 3 OL capable of starting, although we can get by with 2 if Carvin comes back. Cade likely gone.
- 1 WR capable of starting
- 2 DL capable of starting, (1 pass rusher, 1 interior)
- 2 LB capable of starting
- 2 S capable of starting
- 2 CB capable of starting

Our D is pretty short of play makers. When the QB scrambles we have almost no one capable of chasing him down.

Linemen, linemen, linemen…about 3,000 lbs worth.
