Sorry if I don’t believe what Vols calls says. I don’t think it takes that long. Lol. Especially if we can sign over thirty. That means we could be around 55 scholarship players before signing 30. Then we have 85. So…..Vol calls said max would be about 80 scholarship players next year. It would take about 3 years to reach max 85 .
Looking at 247, we signed 17 and took 10 transfers that count against the 25. We let four out their NLI so that would put us at having 2 available extra signees (I believe). We could sign 27 players and take seven transfers for a total of 34 transfers players. I imagine we will try to fill as many spots as possible and sign/take at least 30 players.I really don’t know how many extra. Some of the portal guys we brought in this year might be forward counted against next year. Only the coaches know how many spots are available.

I’m pretty sure two have already transferred this year in Middleton and Wideman. And we will lose at least five to ten more. We will have no problem getting the max.
Even still… we will have seven transfers. I’m not worried. They don't count unless they transfer after this season. See the link I posted earlier in this thread.
"Schools will only be allowed to replace players who enter the portal after either the end of the institution’s fall term or Dec. 15, 2021, whichever is earlier, a source told The Athletic."
They have to hit the portal after the season is over to count towards the extra 7 scholarships. At least that's the way I interpreted the new rules.I’m pretty sure two have already transferred this year in Middleton and Wideman. And we will lose at least five to ten more. We get all of our LB's back (maybe not Page). If we can add 1 stud LB from the portal, plus Mitchell back from injury, we should be good there not counting any high school kids we sign. We need OL and another edge rusher or two. I do believe there is some young talent that will show up after another year of development at multiple positions though.LB should be #1,
That doesn’t give me a great deal of hope we can stop anyone with a slightly mobile QB on 3rd and long next year.We get all of our LB's back (maybe not Page). You're forgetting that all of these guys had little if any game experience before this season. Our starters (Banks and Beasley) didn't play the position in high school, and this defense is completely different from what Pruitt ran. Then they both missed Spring practice. I expect to see major improvement in year 2 at every defensive position. Mitchell was the only LB with much real game experience and he was trying to play with a shoulder that needed surgery. That doesn’t give me a great deal of hope we can stop anyone with a slightly mobile QB on 3rd and long next year.
Unless we upgrade through the portal
That’s where we differ. I’m not forgetting. You're forgetting that all of these guys had little if any game experience before this season. I've seen far less athletic linebackers make those plays routinely for many years. Being in position (the proper location) and being in position (proper body position and technique) are two different things. The latter comes from experience. That’s where we differ. I’m not forgetting.
I don’t see the main problem being lack of experience or new to this system.
I see to many times where they are in a position to make a tackle and don’t because the offensive players are too elusive for their athletic talent.
Lack of experience problems would indicate not being in position to make the tackle.
You won’t get major improvement in athletic talent. It has its limits
For portal attrition (32), how many portal guys are we going to sign? And at what positions?
I say up to 14 (including Juco):
- 1 backup qb
- 1 backup RB
- 3 OL capable of starting, although we can get by with 2 if Carvin comes back. Cade likely gone.
- 1 WR capable of starting
- 2 DL capable of starting, (1 pass rusher, 1 interior)
- 2 LB capable of starting
- 2 S capable of starting
- 2 CB capable of starting
Our D is pretty short of play makers. When the QB scrambles we have almost no one capable of chasing him down.
