Assuming we get the extra 7 spots

We get all of our LB's back (maybe not Page). If we can add 1 stud LB from the portal, plus Mitchell back from injury, we should be good there not counting any high school kids we sign. We need OL and another edge rusher or two. I do believe there is some young talent that will show up after another year of development at multiple positions though.
Just because we get them back does not mean that we don’t need a major talent influx at that position. But we have a lot of holes and need a lot depth. It will be interesting to see who all they bring in.

For portal attrition (32), how many portal guys are we going to sign? And at what positions?

I say up to 14 (including Juco):
- 1 backup qb
- 1 backup RB
- 3 OL capable of starting, although we can get by with 2 if Carvin comes back. Cade likely gone.
- 1 WR capable of starting
- 2 DL capable of starting, (1 pass rusher, 1 interior)
- 2 LB capable of starting
- 2 S capable of starting
- 2 CB capable of starting

Our D is pretty short of play makers. When the QB scrambles we have almost no one capable of chasing him down.
There might only be 3 capable SEC starting OL total in the portal lol.

Correct. People keep acting like we just get 7 extra are wrong.
Both posts wrong! It only for players entering the portal at end of this term or by 12/15-7? …NOT previous this summer, spring or winter. We can only add (replace) whatever players that enter portal between now and December. At least how all the articles I read explained it.

Wrong. We can replace players that leave after this semester ends or December 15, whichever is earlier. Only players that leave after that date (not sure when the semester ends but whichever is earlier) can be replaced is the way I read it.

The point is people think it’s for replacing players earlier in year and it NOT! If no players leave next 1.5 months, we don’t get up to 7 extra spots, it’s only a one for one deal up to 7.

The guys from high school we can possibly get are likely going to get recruited over if we are winning. So much won’t change regarding future depth.
That still diminishes experience. You're talking about basically an empty class in 2-4 years...that's not good.

I think everyone understands this 🤣

This is the MFing RF after all.

Not a huge risk in the portal unless you get a lot of guys with only 1-2 years of eligibility.
You do have a point. More transfers these days should have more eligibility. Still...they're unlikely to have 4-5 years. At this point I feel like we'll need to build up a veteran team over some years to have a breakthrough season. Just tough to build the level of chemistry with a mercenary squad needed to play with the big boys. But hey, maybe Heupel can.

Sorry if I don’t believe what Vols calls says. I don’t think it takes that long. Lol. Especially if we can sign over thirty. That means we could be around 55 scholarship players before signing 30. Then we have 85. So…..

Not to mention we will have about 6 or 7 seniors returning because of the extra Covid year and they won’t count against the 85.

You can't do it year after year, but right now with the limited numbers they don't have time to physically develop as many players. We need as many bodies that can handle the physical aspects as possible.

Need a

Backup QB (this ones obvious)

1-2 safeties (McCollough and Flowers are both horrid and probably not fixable, and I’m not ready to throw the young guys out there)

Starting caliber RT (Cade comes back and we could get a swing guy, would be even better. See Dennis Kelly when he was with the titans to know what I mean when I say “swing guy”)

2 DTs (1 starting caliber, 1 developmental like Terry)

Starting caliber LB (someone with experience)

Starting caliber WR (we could get away without this but if someone with enough talent is out there with interest then bring them on)

Starting caliber CB (to replace Alontae)

Another RB if we don’t get Hayden
