At this point should we play one of Vescovi or Plavsic in spite of NCAA?

Barnes says it is up to Vescovi on whether he will play this season. Will he waste a year by coming out to play a half year with this lineup?

He should think about this very carefully. We could sure use Victor Bailey right now.

Next season is another story. Who will be the starters next year. Fulky or Plavsic? Vescovi or JJJ at point? Will Bowden be replaced by JJJ or one of the freshmen?

Bowden will be gone so pretty likely he'll be replaced..

Vescovi I believe will play now. I'm sure the competitor he is he will want to play. NCAA has to clear all players in any sport academically so I'm sure they our waiting for that. He is a true point guard and can make this team better from day one.

My theory is that with Turner being out this will be a rebuilding year anyway. The season is nearly half over and we have 8 wins. Without Turner, Plavsic, or Vescovi we are staring a 7-11type SEC season right in the face.

Since Plavsic has already been denied once, I say we play Vescovi regardless of the consequences. What is the worst the NCAA will do to us? Vacate our 7 or 8 SEC wins this year? Big whoop...because that is what it is looking like. I would honestly rather have at least Vescovi, maybe Plavsic just go ahead and play to get the SEC experience for next year. Who really cares if we vacate ~8 SEC wins as long as we get these guys experience. We could easily make those up in ‘21 and ‘22 with veteran players.

Surely the NCAA wouldn’t put us on probation for playing players who are in good academic standing, and were recruited legally with no financial incentives. What is the risk reward at this point? Would you trade 7-9 vacated wins in SEC play just to get the guys experience for next year since we will have sooo much new enrolling talent? I would....because I don’t see us doing much better than that after losing Turner. Thoughts? It’s not like it’s a Wiseman situation at Memphis, not even close...
I think, could be wrong, but Memphis is in hot water for knowingly playing someone that had been ruled ineligible. I think, could be wrong, IF we play Uros knowing that he has been ruled ineligible (regardless of the reason) we would in fact be in the same violation as Memphis, who has now invited a full investigation into their program (which we NEVER want to happen). I'm not an attorney nor do I play one on TV but it seems that would be like slapping a hornet's nest and expecting no stings. JMO of course.

Pretty sure Vescovi has already been cleared. CRB has said it is up to him if he wants to play this season.

I think that he was more so addressing whether SV would redshirt or not.

It doesn't seem as if Vescovi has been officially cleared by the NCAA and it also seems as if Barnes has no concerns that it will happen.

Barnes also began his presser saying the loss of Turner had nothing to do with the days performance. Seems like losing a guy that averaged 36+ in wins with points and assists certainly figures in to a loss by 20. Barnes should be concerned. He wasn't concerned about Uros either. After 30 years shouldn't he know the NCAA is unpredictable and nothing is a given?

I don't think that I've ever heard CRB utter a word about SV not being cleared is a possibility. It could be his way of putting pressure on the NCAA, but it sure seems like it's a routine matter that's been handled. Apparently UT fumbled on Uros with some of the paperwork. And it wasn't a routine approval, TN was putting together a case for an exception to the NCAA's written rules on transfers. Vescovi is a rubber stamp and the NCAA will get blasted if they interfere with his eligibility.

True, we don’t want to open the door for a possible NCAA investigation...However, my thoughts between our situation vs the one at Memphis is there was money involved with Memphis and Penny/Wiseman....

it just seems a much more egregious violation at Memphis than if we were to play one of our players...Whom all made it here without $$ and are in good academic standing. The NCAA surely wouldn’t punish us as bad as Memphis for playing one of our guys.

The Plavsic situation is irritating because he already redshirted/sat out a year at Arizona St. So he is essentially losing a year of eligibility by sitting his RS-freshman year at UT and will be a RS-sophomore before he ever sees the court.

Also the fact that he transferred to a different conference after his “handler” of sorts left Arizona State. It just doesn’t seem fair. It can be a tough adjustment for a young guy in a new country, and the NCAA certainly has not done Uros any favors. Especially given he merely wanted to come back home to Tennessee where he played HS ball.

As far as Vescovi, I expect him to be eligible and now play with the loss of Turner. He will just begin his freshman season in January like Stokes did a few years ago...hopefully

Vescovi will play once cleared IMO. He's been all about basketball for awhile now. Losing the pre-season before conference play in the first year of four is not really impactful on his college career. Getting to take the reins as a true freshman would be impactful.

From Dec 20th
signed with Tennessee earlier this year and has been academically cleared. Vescovi will be eligible to play for Tennessee as soon as he arrives on campus

Old news but has Barnes saying he's already cleared.

I agree totally with explanation and feeling about the Uros situation. I also think SV will be cleared quickly.

While I can appreciate the “F You” message this would send the NCAA, no way Barnes ever does something like this imo.
Doesn’t really jive with the type of program he runs.
Plus, doing something like this would ruin any future goodwill we could ever hope to have from them. Do something like this and the next thing you know you have a coach getting a show cause for hosting a kid at a bbq...wait a sec.
NM...F it...play them!!
It would sound like a pretty good jive move to me. But it does not jibe with the kind of optic we want to present.

Yep. This roster has more deficiencies than just the point position. Vescovi might be a nice PG down the line, but he's not going to save this season. Develop the younger players and take your lumps this year. No need to burn a year on vescovi's clock for this season.

Why not just forfeit the rest of the season. would be a lot healthier next season. Maybe suspend the program for a season or 2.

Honestly it wouldn’t matter. Vescovi could play this year and still redshirt next season because we will have Victor Bailey Jr at PG in 20-21, along with JJJ coming back. Vescovi is just the only one who will probably be immediately eligible this year, and we have a big need there right now. I think playing SV this year would only create more competition and depth for next year in a good way anyhow.

Players can redshirt any year they want, just as we’ve had some upperclassmen football players do this year. Playing half of a season may not be ideal, but if it’s against SEC competition I wouldn’t say he is burning a year at all.

Bailey should have 2 years remaining to play. He's also here for 2021-22.
