At what point

We have fallen so far

A loss to Georgia would have been the end of the world.

For those too young to remember go find the 1994 UT/UGA game. UT had just lost to UCLA and lost it's SR starting QB in that game. Todd Helton started for the Vols and the Dawgs were supposed to roll!

UT simply handed off the ball 40-50 times to a plethora of RB's and ran it down their throats. There was no moping and whining, UT simply got behind it's strength (O-line...sound familiar) and hammered UGA in Athens.

UT fans are so used to making excuses for losses that they've lowered their expectations to celebrate close losses. Sad.

I feel like it wasn't in 2000 though.

A loss back then to Vandy or Kentucky, yes, certainly though. Were this board around it might have crashed so hard it might have never come back up.

Its scary to imagine the Game Thread during the 2001 SEC Championship Game

What about the Nebraska Orange Bowl?

Numerous threads of how Peyton would throw 500 yards against an untested Nebraska D, as well as, multiple threads predicting a blowout by UT

I would have been one of those, but that was when we were expected to win those big games

did "keeping it real" become such a bad thing?

All you people calling for upsets of every ranked team on our schedule best cool the jets a little. Nothing wrong with being hopeful, but at sometime you just have to face the fact that we are not a very good team

Yes, we beat S. Carolina, but we are still coming off a 5-7 season with a whole roster of new faces that may or may not pan out. You don't know until they hit the real field how they will perform. New guys have to learn playbooks, blocking schemes, etc. Majority won't enroll until later and have only a few months and limited practices to learn. College is a whole different monster than HS football. Even great players have a learning curve.

Everyone looks good in practices, so getting your hopes up over a big play here and there in practice is not a good indicator of future success.

We still have a ways to go and these guys will need us to be patient and stop expecting too much out of them and then being disappointed because they didn't beat the likes of OU, Bama, and the other power teams on our schedule

Ad to that, a 2nd year coaching staff still learning what it takes to win in the SEC. Still developing the players. Still working on play calling during games

Now, I fully expect my fandom to come into question. Believe me, I have drank enough of the Koolaid over the years to drown a Crimson Elephant. I can also tell you that anyone who is still a fan of UT after the last 6 years is no imposter.

Here's hoping we make a bowl and improve more in 2015

brilliant.

i'm in this same boat right now as well.

i believe most people just don't want to give up on a season before it starts. there's no fun in that.

when reality isn't any fun we turn to fantasy. i know, realistically, florida isn't playing for a national title, sec title, division title in 2014. in that sense, this season has ended before it has started for me unless i start lying to myself.

but, there are always rivalries to look forward to. there are always "what if's". so, i watch. i cheer. i hope for miracles.

but, beyond all of that in 2014 (and i think this is true for tennessee as well), everyone should be excited just to see players on the field who might create a better 2015 than 2014.

It sucks for us both

I think Florida would be good with a few dynamic pieces on offense. Your D is solid. They just gave up at the end of the season. We've seen that before

Translation: some of you need to pump the breaks a little.

I'm excited about the talent upgrade we've seen on the roster since Butch arrived, but it's going to take some time until we see that translate into wins. IMO.

I agree. Well said, its more than likely going to be a rough yr for our young Vols. But watch out for 16 & 17. GO VOLS!

The thing is when u accept mediocrity that's all u will ever get. I dont think missing a bowl should've happened any of the last 3 years regardless of circumstance and there is no reason we cant this year. If u keep expecting 5 win seasons thats what u probably will get because it will become accepted. Im not saying we will win the east but 6 wins is completely possible.

As fans our expectations shouldn't mean anything to the team. If our expectations affect the team then the coaches aren't doing their job.

Fan is short for fanatic. You're gonna have both ends of the spectrum and everything in between on an anonymous forum.

Great post--but remember, 90% of Volnation was quoting the phrase: "we gonna whoop dey azz" last year before the Bama game!

You've got an uphill battle there Count! :salute:

Don't leave out how everyone expected the Broncos to waltz down main street over the Seahawks.

I hate the Seahawks--Pete Carroll, too! But if their physical BEATDOWN of the best HUNH (Hurry Up, No Huddle) offensive scheme to ever exist don't convince folks that TEMPO doesn't win JACK SQUAT against a physically dominating team--I don't know what ever will!

Freak "gets it"

Our first piece is in place and that was a great recruiting class

Now, I want to see a bowl game. Lower the margin of victory by our tougher opponents. Win another unexpected game. Close on another top 5 class

2015, win even more. Get in the final Top 25 rankings. Another Top 5 class

2016, compete for the SEC title.

Sorry for the consecutive posts--just catching up--

but I certainly believe we must improve to at least 7-5 this year to continue the recruiting momentum--8-4, although WAY TOO OPTIMISTIC--would go a long way in convincing recruits that our VOLS are indeed, headed back to the SEC championship...sooner and not later! :salute:

2016? To quote a former President, this post suffers from "the soft bigotry of low expectations."

We just signed a 32-player recruiting class full of four-star players and 14 early enrollees, so it's really like we signed two recruiting classes in one year. By adding an instant infusion of speed and playmaking ability to a 5-7 roster that sorely needed it, there's no reason why we shouldn't expect to win EIGHT games this season and to win the SEC East in 2015. Coach Jones has said that 6-win seasons are totally unacceptable for a program with our resources, and I believe that he can get it done.

2014 Expectation: 9-4

Give up Count. You are right, but I think there are 4 trains of thought on VN:

1. This group thinks we could lose to Utah St and only win 5 games. They are only freshmen. They need a year or two.

2. This group thinks we are gonna whip dey azz (insert everyone). We demand titles!!! We've out recruited "Oregon" (insert other teams deemed inferior before the game -- look at the statistics). Our just out of high school freshmen will play great against seasoned starters from major SEC schools.

3. Group one thinks group two is stupid and possibly drunk, uneducated, or both.

4. Group two thinks group one are little b*tches that accept failure.

There is nothing wrong with fans wanting us to be great. Just because some people go all out and predict wins against ranked opponents doesn't mean anything. If that makes them happy then who is anyone on here to play Johnny Raincloud. I think we will have a good season, maybe 7-8 wins.

This board can be pretty petty sometimes. Just let people have their fun. If they wind up being wrong, so what? Nobody can say with any certainty what our record will be. It's all just assumptions. One persons assumptions are no better than anyone else's.

I'll start off by saying I'm drunk. I remember my family getting together just to watch a tn game bc we were sure to win I became a true fan when kiffin because coach (I was in the 7th grade) It was the first time remember feeling excitement over football. I feel the same way over butch and I think our recievers will be unstoppable this year. If your in Chattanooga and you'd like to earn $5 buying me beer or liquor message me.
