Atlanta Braves II

Look on the bright side at least we are already in late season form.

Fun fact, dating back to last season the Braves have scored 7 runs in the previous 6 games. That is 7 runs in 58 innings. Boom.

Consistency is the biggest attribute to the long baseball season. This team is horribly consistent when it comes to driving balls down into the ground and making life boring for opposing infielders.

I usually ain't this negative until around the end of May... but after last seasons monumental collapse and this mockery we witnessed today. I've already hit mid season form. SMH.

We get to stew on this sh...[don't taze my post, bro] an extra day per the off-day tomorrow. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Been away from the computer for awhile Getting beat by Santana 1-0 on opening day isn't the problem. The fact that Constanza is on the roster is the problem. It means that Fredi still has enough standing to be significatly involved in personnel decisions. It was stupid to play him so much last year and it's stupid to have him back out there this year.

Not going to freak out too badly about the offense until it's someone other than Santana on the mound.

Yes, it was Santana but a Santana that had not pitched in games that count since 2010. Not exactly the Santana that was leading the league in strike outs every year when in Minnesota.

Still, Cy Young winner in the first game of the year. No reason to wet the bed yet. Other than that Fredi's in charge, of course.

There are a lot of 1-0, 2-1 type games on opening day.

Agreed. My problem is Fredi's clear incompetancy showing on day 1. And NY showing, I mean glaring.

I read somewhere this offseason that Frank Wren's lack of action was a clear sign that he feels this team is certainly good enough and if it comes up short then it's on Fredi. Ignores some factors, but an interesting take nonetheless.

Well, while I am with you on Fredi, it's not his doing that in the 5th, 6th, and 7th the braves had runners in scoring position and did not drive them in. It's difficult to put that on fredi 100%, as somebody needs to step up during those opportunities.

What could Fredi have really done differently yesterday other than maybe squeeze with Constanza after the Patornicky triple?

Not have Constanza in in the first place.

That wasn't an option though. Chipper is hurt, so Prado was at 3rd. Diaz started the game and had left the game in a double switch. The only alternative would have been to lift Constanza and let Hinske hit right handed which would have really hurt defensively.

It goes back to the fact that Constanza is even on the team.

I can't argue with that. At best, he's a late inning defensive replacement. They really need to deal for a left handed bat off the bench that can play LF.

Francisco to 3rd, Prado to LF. um, Hinske to LF. Hinske pinch hit for contanza and stay in to play left. Hinske to pinch hit for Constanza and francisco go in to 3rd and prado to left. JACK WILSON to 3rd and prado to left. Hell I would have let David Ross pinch hit for Constanza. There are 5 people sitting on the bench and he picked the only wrong answer. There is no reason for Constanza to be in the batter's box in that situation.

And to a further point with Fredi, Hinske should have hit for Diaz with 2nd/3rd and 2 outs in the 6th.

Fredi likes speed. That's why he played Constanza so much last year; that's why he's back this year. Fast players give you more options, and Fredi loves to manage. But I think everybody else in baseball figured out in the 80s that you can't waste a roster spot on somebody who can't do anything except run.

The move I would have wanted is Hinske pinch hitting and then playing 3rd, but I guess they thought Constanza would at least put the at on the ball.

The point though is you can pick apart a 1-0 game. There's no point.

Picking apart as in if we would have got this strike call in the 2nd inning, or that hit in the 4th, or etc etc I agree, no point. However in a 1-0 game I think managerial decisions are very much open to critiquing. And I'm not doing it after the fact, i was front and center. If Constanza had gotten the job done, I'll be wrong, crow, look dumb, whatever. But a manager's job is to put the 25 players in the beat chance to win, and Jose Constanza batting isn't it.
