Atlanta Braves II

A long term deal would work with McCann if the NL adopts the DH in a few years. Otherwise, I'd be ok, just ok, with him walking.

Look I love Rossy. He's also in his mid-30's. You will be getting Mac, the best catcher in baseball, for $12M next year. That's actually a good deal.

Mac is no longer the best cather in baseball. Posey and Wieters have easily supplanted him.

I agree we pick up the option for next season, but after that I think (hope) he walks

I was away from the computer all weekend interfacing with actual human beings face to face. A few thoughts:

* Holy crap, that stadium is a dump. It makes the Georgia Dome look like Jerryworld.

* After a rough and disappointing first couple of years, Tim Hudson has been a damn champion for the Braves. I was leery about the trade when they made it, since it clearly seemed like Oakland was dumping a guy whose best days were behind him, but damnation it's been a pleasure to watch him pitch.

* Venters has got to be moved out of the high-leverage situations until they figure out what's wrong with him. The ball hitting the runner today was a gift that obscured what can only be called another major failure by him.

* Durbin has had five scoreless appearances in a row, and yet his ERA is still over 5. That said, when you look at his game log, he hasn't given up what turned out to be a meaningful run in a loss since opening day. Don't stone me, but I'm slowly starting to think that he might not be quite as big a piece of garbage as we've all assumed after all.

* Freddie and Jason have both sucked out loud for the last couple of weeks and I'm starting to hold my breath a little about both of them. Since the whole season revolves around the two of them and all.

* I have no comment about Chipper's inability to even DH either of the last two games after taking a ball off the leg, other than to predict that he'll come back tomorrow and hit a home run.

* David Ross is something like 36 years old next year. You can't let McCann go to make him the starter; the question is whether you think Bethancourt can handle the job. It's going to be interesting to see how the Braves handle it.

* Very nice to take a series from one of the frontrunning teams in what is still MLB's premiere division. Win and move on.

Just out of curiosity, did you see the ball that hit Chipper? I've never been one to champion his durability or overall desire to be on the field, but I'm fairly convinced that rocket would have killed a lesser man.

Joe said on the broadcast today that it was one of the ugliest-looking bruises he has ever seen. He should have been more poetic and said it has the color of the stuff that Keith Richards coughs up each day he awakes.

Someone is gonna get their Merit Badge for being cooler than everyone else here, obviously.

Nope. Mostly a wife, a sister, and a bunch of little kids. I went to Six Flags and only got to ride one grown-up rollercoaster because I spent the rest of time waiting in line for things that the kids could ride. Nothing cool at all. Just the kind of thing that keeps you from sitting down in front of a computer much at all.

They still have the Mind Bender there? Only redeemable roller coaster I remember from that park.

I saw it. I also watch hockey, where guys routinely drop down and -- on purpose! -- block 100 mph slapshots from just a few feet away, limp off the ice on one leg, miss maybe a shift, and then are back right out there like nothing happened. I've seen pictures of the ladders of horrible bruises up and down their legs after a few games of the playoffs. I can't believe that Chipper couldn't have stood there and swung a bat four times today if he'd really wanted to.

This sounds like an ESPN Sports Science piece in the making.

They do, and my kid is actually tall enough to ride it, but by the time we got around there he was too tired to give it a go. Bummer. At least it was free -- my wife's company picnic was there, so they paid for the whole thing. I think it's a dead-even race between when my son gets to be tall enough to ride everything and when I get too old to be able to even think about it.

I'm flying up to Baltimore for a bachelor party in a few weeks, and when I beat my chest then about being away from the computer all weekend, I'll definitely be bragging about how cool I am. Not this time.

Cmon.. We're talkin about the Ol Battleaxe. If that ball had hit a bone/joint we could kiss him goodbye til the AllStar break

No doubt. I don't want to know what those guys do to themselves.

This is what it looks like when you block NHL snapshots. This guy didn't miss any time either.

Don't give yourself a gorilla coronary on us now.

I might well die. I'm 15 years too old for a bachelor party. I've totally outsourced the "stop drinking and go home and pass out like a gentleman, you idiot" part of my brain to my wife, and she's going to be 700 miles away. I really shouldn't be out by myself anymore.
