Guys - what am I missing with Jason Heyward? Why does he make the money he makes?
I'm listening to the talking chop podcast and they are talking about how he is was not a bust and I can see where they are saying that. He's still a good player but not what he was hoped to be. Like Scotty Hopson. Hopson was a really nice player but never lived up to his McD's AA hype.
But Heyward is not anything special and they are kinda defending his contract which has to be one of the worst in baseball. The guy is 6'5" 240 plays right field and has been in the league 8 years and he's got 115 homeruns. Career BA is .262.
He's not terrible but he's not even an all star. I mean he's Nick Markakis really.
The guys on the talking chop webcast keep talking about him having a 6wAR but I'm just thinking to myself that just makes me question that stat even more than I already do.
What am I missing?
Thinking about doing fantasy baseball this year. Who has the best free leagues? I'm assuming there's an app for these things now.
Man I feel like an old geezer asking these questions. Truth is I haven't done fantasy league stuff since around 2000.
Appreciate the feedback on this the other day. Today at lunch I decided I'd take a slightly above average player from yesteryear and compare him to Heyward. I still think this guy is the most overpaid and overrated player in the game.

Anyway, I know most won't care but I just thought I'd share. IDK why I'm fixated on him. I guess I'm just blown away by the contract. Also, like someone else said his height makes his numbers seem even worse.
I think the short history of Heyward's contract runs like this. He showed phenomenal power and patience in the minors and as a rookie. And then something happened to screw up his hitting -- injuries, the Braves' insistence that he start swinging at more pitches, whatever. But he hit free agency when he was still young enough and his other skills were so manifest that a team with all the money in the world to spend thought what the hell, there's incredible upside here and worst-case scenario he's still an okay player because his defense is so good. If there were a salary cap then his contract might be a problem but as it is, I don't think the Cubs care all that much about money.
He is just so damn busy at the plate pre-pitch. Wishd he quit the jive, shorten up and drive the ball. I think he is just too far gone at this point.
