I don't want to find myself in a situation where I defend Brady (as I currently am). Gag. So this will be my last post on the subject.
Ifs and buts are meaningless and you should know that. I guess Jordan should be reduced because of Phil Jackson? While I loathe Brady and the Patriots, discounting him is ridiculous. You still have to play the game. Name me one better postseason QB. That's where they are judged. I love Manning but if we are honest, his playoff career left me desiring more. Brady wins his 5th and 4th Super Bowl MVP, which he probably will, is unheard of and I last time I checked the hoodie never strapped on the pads and played the game. Just the way it is.
Never answered why it didn't work in Cleveland btw.
1. I have trouble operating in this Cowherdian narrative-based world, where Flo Jacco and Eli are pedestrian quarterbacks who nevertheless TURN IT UP IN THE PLAYOFFS, where two years ago Tom Brady MADE HIS CASE AS THE GOAT because Pete Carroll forgot to hand the ball to Marshawn Lynch, and where Dan Fscking Marino doesn't even exist. But if I did I might count up all the first round byes Brady has enjoyed, which are mostly due to the awful division he plays in, and speculate as to why he's squandered that advantage by only turning it into four titles. I would definitely argue that he gagged in both losses to the Giants, and then I'd certainly boo-hoo his first three rings because early in his career he was largely asked to be a game manager type -- i.e., hand it off, don't F it up, and we'll win it with defense.
...but that would be silly because it would be blaming Brady for situations that were larger than what he had control over. Which would be as misguided as giving the QB all the credit for situations that he doesn't have control over. Which is what the BRADY IS THE GREATEST!!1 argument also depends on.
2. Again, I am not "discounting" Brady; I am not arguing that he is a bum. He is an all-timer. What I am saying is that when you put an all-time QB on normal teams, he's probably going to win one or two Super Bowls over the course of his career like Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Elway, etc. But when you pair an all-time QB with an all-time coach, then you get a dynasty. See also Joe Montana and Bill Walsh. Hell, Troy Aikman has three rings, and he wasn't even that good.
3. It didn't work in Cleveland because even an all-time coach needs better than replacement-level quarterbacking, and all he had there were the reanimated corpses of Bernie Kosar and Vinnie Testaverde. If you'd dropped an elite QB in his lap back then maybe the franchise would never have moved.
4. I do not discount Jordan because of Phil Jackson; I discount Phil Jackson because of Jordan. (And Kobe, and Shaq.) Basketball's a completely different animal. I'm not even sure Phil Jackson is a good coach, much less a great one.
