I know I'm in the minority, but Barnes is a Cuonzo clone and will recruit slightly above average and NEVER DO A DAMN THING
bangexcept he's been to the ncaa tournament more years than z and lotto have been alive.
Barnes will come in, stabilize the program, go to the tournament more years than not, and re-solidify ut as a good sec basketball program. He will prove again that you can win here, that this is an attractive job. Re-establishing the program is priority #1.

2009 he signed 2 5* and a 4 *
2010 he signed 2 5*
2011 1 5*, 3 4* , and 2 3*
2012 1 4* and 4 3*
2013 2 4* and 2 3*
2014 1 5* and 1 4*
All that talent and never made the sweet 16 1 time since '08 is embarrassing. Anyone could stabilize the program the same way he would
Would you rather just keep churning through Conference USA-level coaches every few years hoping to strike gold? Every time you hire somebody that doesn't turn into a superstar, you just dig the hole that much deeper.
I don't play golf, so I'm probably not going to say this right, but I see this hire as the equivalent of laying it up on the green to set up a makeable putt for par. Barnes isn't going to win a championship himself, but he'll stabilize the program -- making it possible to then hire the coach who will.
You may be right, I just don't see that happening. That's JMO. I will gladly eat crow if wrongWould you rather just keep churning through Conference USA-level coaches every few years hoping to strike gold? Barnes left the Texas job attractive enough that supposedly Shaka Smart, who's refused every other overture so far, is considering it. If he comes to Knoxville and just does the same stuff that he did there -- recruits pretty well, and wins a bunch of games, and goes to the tournament most of the time, and stays here a few years and puts an end to the drama -- then next time we need to hire a coach, future top-level candidates will probably consider us. Right now they won't give us a look. It's highly damning that Gregggg Marshall is apparently more interested in Alabama this year than he was in us last year.
I just think that's a more likely route to eventually hiring a championship-caliber coach than to keep plucking guys out of places like Missouri State and Southern Miss and hoping one of them turns into Billy Donovan.
