The misnomer on Winston is that he is dumb, he is actually really smart. But insanely immature, that along with the privilege of being a top prep prodigy is a dangerous combo. That said, the NFL will roll the dice on that talent every time. They are maybe what, 10-20 elite QB's over the age of 18 on this earth right now?

I think my takeaway from the fact that there are so few good QBs might be the opposite of yours. What I think that says is: don't get too excited about how great any of these guys look in college, because almost none of them are going to develop into good NFL starters. And that therefore you should think really, really hard before you spend a top 5 draft pick on a quarterback. Drew Brees went in the second round. Aaron Rodgers went late in the first. Russell Wilson went in the third. Tom Brady went in the sixth. You don't have to spend a top pick to get a top QB, and conversely, spending that top pick in no way guarantees that you'll get one.

I don't think it matters how good his football IQ was playing in the ACC, because maturity and attitude and leadership and all that old-man crap matters too much as an NFL QB. I'd try to trade down and take my QB later.

(Disclaimer: I was strongly in favor of the Falcons drafting Glenn Dorsey over Matt Ryan, so I am a proven idiot on this topic.)
