Auburn fires Gus Malzahn

I honestly don’t know who will be able to impress Bama fans after Saban. I definitely don’t think Cristobal’s body of work is enough to get their attention and he needs to get Oregon to a CFP to at least be considered. I think he’s doing a good job amd will eventually have them in contention.
I think the only guy who would impress them at this point is Dabo, and I don't think he'll take the job. I think they'd be OK with Kirby, but I don't think he'll take the job either. Same deal with Jimbo Fisher.

I think they are setting themselves up already to be really disappointed with Saban's replacement, and that's before he's even coached a game. It's quite possible they end up going with somebody they don't deem "worthy enough" to hold the position, which will shorten that coach's already really short leash.

I think the only guy they'd exercise any semblance of patience with would be Dabo (given that he's beaten Saban multiple times in CFP title games), but perhaps even that is a stretch.

Look at the stats. JH numbers significantly increased his Junior and senior seasons compared to his first two years. MC was interim for the last game in 2017 and became HC in 2018.

Justin Herbert College Stats | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

You should expect stats to get better regardless, but you're making the fatal error of comparing 8 game seasons vs 13-14 game seasons. He averaged exactly the same YPG (242) as a freshman that he did as a junior. His sophomore year was his best completion % and YPA. His Freshman year was his 2nd best TD/INT ratio. His Freshman year was very close to his senior TD rate.

His YPG stats were pretty stagnant throughout college with a modest improvement by his senior year, which you should hope to see at the very least.

Don't try to bring reason into this. I mean he got beat by Bo Nix. Herbert is terrible and Cristobal is hot garbage.

Be smart before being a smart ass.

I completely agree. I don’t why Kirby would ever be considered an option though. Why leave his alma mater and burn every bridge possible there for the school you can’t beat? Seems unlikely to me.

He won’t, but his name comes up purely because of the longtime Saban connection and his success at Georgia.

Cristobal using Auburn to get a nice raise.

University of Oregon trustees on Thursday unanimously approved a new six-year, $27 million contract for Ducks coach Mario Cristobal.

The agreement extends Cristobal's original contract by two years through the 2025 season. His salary will increase from $2.7 million to $4.3 million in January, and the coach will earn an average of $4.55 million during the term.

I don’t know how much the Auburn talk figured into it. They were discussing a multi-year extension before the season but shelved it until later in the year because of covid.
I doubt Cristobal himself said a word, but I'm sure his agent probably had a chat with Oregon about a contract that hasn't been extended and Auburn showing interest. May have motivated Oregon some to get things done. I don't think the timing is a coincidence.

Who knows if Auburn really wanted him though. I'm not sure they would want to make the offer that would pull him away. If Oregon is upping him to 4.3 million, how much would it have taken to pull him away from his current job. A number I'm not sure they'd offer.

Well, Auburn let Gus go on Sunday. On Monday, Oregon moved it's noon-scheduled presser to 6:00 pm. At noon, Washington informed the Pac-12 that it would be unable to field a team for the Friday championship game, so Oregon was bumped from a Saturday game with Colorado (in Los Angeles) to tomorrow's game with Southern Cal (in Los Angeles). At the presser, Cristobal stated he had not been personally contacted by anyone from Auburn, but he did not know if his agent had been contacted. The contract extension had been in the works from before Covid. Also he was focused on signing day (currently #5). Cristobal was never seriously considering leaving Oregon. He did want to get his contract in place. It definitely lit some fires. Auburn fans were pretty egotistical in believing they could outpay Cristobal to go deal with their weird politics (the same politics that led to Gus being fired, for example). As a Duck fan, being through a few coaching let-downs, this never felt like any of those.

Cristobal didn't know how to maximize an all-time great NFL ready talent. He held him back.

Passing stats require a couple things, one someone who can put the ball in a catchable location and on time, Herbert did that. The second thing is the guy on the other end has to catch the ball, this was a bit "iffy" during Herbert's time at Oregon. Plus, every year he played under a new OC. And yes Mario likes to pound the ball at opponents.

Auburn Undercover reports Purdue's Jeff Brohm reached out seeking an interview. Oklahoma St Mike Gundy & UAB Bill Clark are also new names mentioned. Auburn DC Kevin Steele remains leading candidate according to AUC

I like Jeff Brohm personally but doubt Auburn would hire a guy they just beat 63-14 a couple seasons ago....Just saying

Tony Barnhart is a pretty reliable source for AU info. He said today his strong belief is that AU has a deal in place with someone whose season is not over. Strongly indicated it is a coach in the playoff. Doug Matthews prodded him some to say if he thinks it's Sark but TB did not give a name. Probably Sark or the Clemson OC.
