Auburn hires Malzhan as OC

So I'm assuming you think that Arkansas success with him and decline with out him with practically the same offense was a conicidence? You must also think that every NFL and College team using a variation of the Wildcat formation (created by Malzahn) is a coincidence too? How about having the top offense in the country in his first two years at Tulsa? But no, look away from all that and it was a terrible hire. I hope everybody will finally recognize him as one of the best OC's in the country like they should.

Arkansas' offensive yards per game went up from 2006 to 2007. The dropoff in success had a lot more to do with all the defensive players that graduated.

Yes, Arkanasas's scoring did go up from 2006 to 2007.

IMO, coaching was not the reason why. Some of the scoring stats are inflated b/c of who the Hogs played and HDN's intent to bolster his stats. He knew he was being compared to Malzahn at Tulsa.

In 2007 So Cal was dropped from the schedule and replaced with Troy. In 2007 the Hogs scored 46 against Troy. Later the Hogs scored 66 against North Texas and 58 against FLA Int'l. In 2006 they simply did not run the score up against the scrub teams.

Also, in 2007 the Hogs played a triple overtime game against LSU and ended up scoring 50 in that win.

While the scoring stats for the Hogs increased during 2007, the important stat "Wins" went down while having virtually the same team and an easier schedule.

BTW, has Barkley said anything yet about the Malzahn hire?
Maybe he doesn't know about it yet. Maybe somebody should send him an email informing him of the hire so we can hear his informed opinion.

Yep. Must have been Malzahn leaving that allowed the opposition to score so many more points in 2007. Had nothing to do with the absence of Chris Houston, Jamaal Anderson, Keith Jackson, and Sam Olajabatu

You said the offensive play dropped off with Malzahn's departure. This comparison is irrelevant. As for Jones and McFadden, they had about half as many touches in 2005 as they did in either 06 or 07.

Had everything to do with terrible recruiting on the defensive side of the ball.

Look, HDN used the wildcat to death with Hillis, D-Mac and Felix in the backfield. If Malzahn doesn't introduce that package, HDN doesn't use it. Now, HDN would have put the ball in D-Mac's and Felix's hands but it would not have been as successful IMO.

It is relevant, it shows what AR had before Malzahn was hired.

I gotta go, I completely understand where you are coming from.
Sure AR scored more points in 2007, their opponents were not as good that year. (BTW, both D-Mac's and Felix's average yds per carry dropped from 2006 - 2007 :) ).

I think Malzahn will be a good hire for Aubie, but still not sure about Chizik.

Good conversation and hope everyone has a good week.

Best,

SLC
