If he also lucks into inheriting one of the greatest shooters in college history and some great rim protectors then sure.
Tourney appearance every year while he was here. All of it luck?
I'm not saying other coaches couldn't have taken that team far, but Buzz Peterson had virtually the same team and went 14-17.
Make no mistake, Peterson was terrible and should have done more with that team in 2004, but I'm going to give credit where credit is due. Pearl took a bottom feeder and made them a #2 seed.
you are indeed specialI don't blame Bruce for the sins of Chuck Person.
No head coach should be expected to shoulder the blame for the sinister machinations of a morally bankrupt assistant who goes behind his back to line his own pockets.
I didn't like the Person hire when I first heard of it way back when. I'm not surprised that he turned out to be the turd in the proverbial punch bowl.
I believe Bruce will get his program back on track after the investigation of the college basketball recruiting scandal has run its course and he gets the right people down there helping him right the ship.
Personally, I wish him well and hope that Auburn rises above the current situation they find themselves in.
I wouldn't mind having another program in the conference that can knock off KY and FL and our other more established rivals in SEC basketball.
That's good for UT.
Pearl was a good coach but don't act like he didn't get lucky. No coach since has inherited as much proven talent.
He had a Freshman AA who is one of our greatest players coming back after averaging 13 ppg on 47% 3pt shooting. He also got a 5 star pf who had started at UCLA before transferring.
Not to mention and NBA pg who is probably our best pg ever. He averaged 12 and 5 the year before Bruce. Don't forget Wingate and his rim protection.
Bruce got lucky with the roster. Buzz was a bad coach but he left Pearl some great talent.
No way Im reading this correctly. Arent you the same guy defending CCM in another thread?
Which coach inherited a freshman All-American who is our greatest shooter and player not name Allan Houston plus the best pg in UT history?
I have always said Pearl was a better coach comparing UT runs. Pearl inherited a way better situation too. Less fan expectations and inherited a better roster. Martin didn't get a guy that averaged over 3.3 ppg the year before. Pearl got the best backcourt in UT history plus two rim protecting, athletic big-men. Martin would have made the tourney with Lofton, Watson, and Smith in the backcourt too.
