The AD hasn't been there even a year and aside from the apparel deal, this is the highest profile thing he's had to do so far. We all know the massive arrogance of that fanbase and imagine the outrage had they not gone after the biggest fish out there, even if it was just for the sake of appearance.

The old, "Make them tell you no" adage, if it doesn't apply to Texas it doesn't apply anywhere.

The fact is they interviewed him early on and a couple of the other realistic candidates which means bases were covered if they couldn't reel in a big name.

Agreed. I think he did it right. Maybe a week sooner would have been better but I would hope all ADs would shoot for the stars first

Can you imagine the outrage that would have been expressed if the Vols had hired him over Dave Serrano? Funny how things work out.

I think he did coach pitching but Maddux is taking it over.

Head coach Stan Stolte says Maddux, currently a special assistant to Dodgers team president Andrew Friedman, always has been willing to help and would put his expertise to use coaching the team’s pitchers.

“He’s got the pitchers,” Stolte said. “Hopefully he does a better job with them than the last guy, which was me.”

Stolte said he and Maddux have similar philosophies in terms of letting the pitchers and catchers work together to call their own games, rather than having every pitch called from the bench. The vast majority of college coaches call pitches, usually with the pitching coach making the calls but often with the head coach involved as well.
