Austin Nichols set to decide....

Seems to me that Dad is wanting his son somewhere other than UT. The longer this goes, the lower UT's chances get. If this goes into the spring, I don't like our chances.

He wants to be an ee (early enrollee), so he will decide soon.

Based on some comments by the dad, I'd say Nichols wants UT, but dad wants him in a more wide open offense and he is influencing him to delay the decision, hoping the kid comes around to his way of thinking.

I think dads putting up a smokescreen...
....I really think dad is just trying to build the suspense a bit for his son.

Some of you may end up on the 5th floor if he waits until the 21st to announce.

Think Roustabout has it surrounded; it's Austin vs. Dad, UTK vs. Duke. Mark Nichols is in a delay mode; no ESPNU; "family will get together" (when? Don't know, I'm travelling). Now, from Quinn's podcast last week, senior Nichols says Austin won't sign NLOI until April regardless of who he commits to.

More suspense? Ha! UTK is already @ DEFCON 2 and climbing.

After months of consideration, five OV's, several UOV's over the last two yrs, previous family pow-wows, etc., to say you're now going to start the decision process is ludicrous (and pretty insulting to the rest of us).

Know family and involved schools want to get this over, but it could easily go past Nov 21st and on to the Spring. [Not stirring the pot; JMO]

So a thread was started based on information too early in the process, which has already turned out to be completely false? Waiting for the pack mentality to ensue and personal attacks on the op to begin....

Yep, the dad made some pretty blatant statements criticizing UT's offense. I hope that Cuonzo is smart enough to either recruit players best suited for his system, or adjust his system according to the talent he has. If he is able to land Nichols in addition to Hubbs then he will have to adjust his philosophy. Systems are great, when you have 3-4 years to work players into a system. This is why Cal is so successful. He knows how to get the most out of talent quickly. The system he runs (dribble drive) is conducive to getting the studs out there fast and making them succeed. So, CCM needs these players to play early, succeed and get to the next level.

IMO, the jury is still out on CCM. My initial impressions were that he was another in a long line of trod and plod coaches. He landed Stokes, and it seems he is very in touch with doing all he can to get this guy the ball. He knows he has a stud and he won't be here long. So, I'm anxious to see what he puts on the floor this year.

Roust, did you not see the comments from mark after their OV here? CCM made sure he left Knoxville feeling much better about the offensive system.

Austin will still announce likely on ESPN, and before the early signing period...as I've continued to say, probably before the end of next week.

As far as signing his NLOI, he may do that early, and may not. He will remain committed to whatever school he announces unless a coaching change, NCAA investigation, make roster shake up etc etc happen before spring...then he may reconsider.

This is all I'm gonna say vol fans, calm down and let Nichols and his family do their thing, we are in good shape. Whether you agree or not, the family is going to be very diligent about this decision, and the family does keep tabs on message boards...this is one of the main issues they have with Memphis, and once again Memphis sites the last few days are calling the family racist and other inappropriate things, which has once again not sat well with the family.

His decision is coming, once again all I'm gonna say is we are in good shape, and just be patient....his announcement is coming.

No, I didn't. Of course with as many in homes and campus visits, it seems strange that this objection would not have been addressed much EARLIER and not less than a month from early signing.

FWIW, I am calm and will not jump off the Gay street bridge if he goes elsewhere.

Yes after the visit mark had much better things to say about the offensive system...said CCM had video presentations and did things during practice to show how Austin would be used, he felt much better than prior to the visit.

As far as how much a concern it really was...I still think it largely was to throw some negative out there about UT to build some suspense.

While I won't jump, I will be dissapointed but happy for Austin...he's a great kid and is going to do great things in life on and off the court...with that said I'm 99.9% sure he's a VOL.

But he mentioned p"play style" in an interview earlier this week, so it is still a separating factor in his mind. Also, he decried the "social fit" of certain schools, implying that wouldn't be in Austin's best interest. Mark is most assuredly not in Camp Counzo on this one, now more than ever after the "UT-commitment" rumors.

Use the Henley Street Bridge. Although still under construction it will sound better in the National News than...... UT Fan Roustabout Jumps from Gay Bridge.

I guess everyone can interpret things differently, but I have never seen comments by Austin's father that suggests that he flat out does not want Austin at UT. I think his father really likes UT and Martin. But, he also likes the chance to play at Duke- something very few people get a chance to do. UT would most certainly be in Austin's interests because of his sister and his friends, and I don't believe his father has a problem with that. His father would love for both kids to be at the same school.

His father just likes Duke more. I don't think he has a problem with Austin going to UT or has a problem with Martin. Sounds like his father wants him to choose a school based on athletics and academics vs. social fit. It's going to be Austin's decision in the end though.

I could tell you a lot that would throw most of what you just said out the window...however, out of respect to Austin I'll stay quiet.

**you yourself have said to look past interviews, and many times it's just "player speak"...I'd suggest you apply that to this situation**

So he's going to Duke?

I hope his Dad gets out of the way and lets this be his adult son's decision. The parents should absolutely be there to provide guidance and input, but they should let him decide at the end of the day.

My take is that the Dad is trying to push him to Duke. I think his Mother likes Tennessee. I don't know about Austin.
