Great post. Dead on.

Great post indeed...I'm a 1974 grad whose had season tickets since 79...
I used to go to most of the home games but if I missed one or two listening to John Ward made it special in other ways....like a long beautiful Fall day on the EMPTY Norris Lake with family...
a daddy/daughter road trip with the top down...
spending it with my father and doing 2 of his favorite things, working in his garden and listening to John Ward...

Not being on TV could be a good thing back then...

These discussions always make me laugh and then feel old. In the 90s, it was great if you had 8 or 9 games televised. In the early to mid 80s, you felt privileged if half the games made it to TV. Having to scramble to see or hear a few games a year was just a fact of life and part of the romance of the whole thing. It's why people think John Ward is the voice of God.

I could never decide if it was John Ward or Paul Harvey that was the voice of God. I hoped that it was John.

When I first moved out of state, I bought a super AM radio, found high ground and turned the radio until you could hear John Ward. pre-cable days.

It will be on ESPN3 and there's always a stream online somewhere in Europe. It's actually fairly easy to catch PPV games w/o having to pay for it nowadays.

Did I read that wrong in that even TN residents will be blocked from ESPN3?

I know how to get around the whole PPV debacle, it's just annoying and I hate watching football on my laptop or hooking it up to my TV.

Like I said, after last year, I didn't expect the season opener to be blacked out. There is never a bad thing that can come from more people having access to watching the game (unless we lose of course).

Us Old Farts had to listen in the 60's and 70's because few college games were on TV period, much less UT games. Voice of God, no, voice of the Vols, YES!!!

I always preferred listening to John Ward over watching the game on TV. Often I would turn off the tv sound and listen to John call the game.

Delay between TV and radio makes this difficult these days.

I'll be in section C for the AP game. I'm doing PPV the fun way.

Going to be in Gatlinburg, TN for the opener. Any idea where a good sports bar is at around those parts? Pigeon Forge area too.

It's blacked out in TN for one of two reasons. Espn is broadcasting the game and Hates us so they won't show it. Or, the game did not sell out, and because of that the tv contracts prohibit it from being shown on tv in the state. Do like I did, buy a ticket and support our program!

That's why most of us old farts miss John Ward

You don't have to be an old fart to miss John Ward. Grew up listening to him. It's not the same without hearing him say "It's Football time in TENNESSEE." Was a fond memory of my childhood.

False, blackouts have nothing to do with attendance in college.

The game is blacked out on ESPN3 in the state of Tennessee because it is being sold on PPV in Tennessee.

If you want to watch it on TV and you live in Tennessee, buy the PPV. It's pretty simple.

I did not realize that. Wonder how regionalized the coverage will be?

It won't be, with limited exceptions, they will stagger the start times as much as they can.

After this year, the CBS exclusivity windows are history, so the SECN will have a game every week at 3-ish as well.
