Australian Open

I just think that the screaming sucks. There's no reason to shriek on each and every shot unless you're deliberately trying to annoy your opponent. Couple that with the way she prances around the court and pumps her fist while looking across the net, and all I see is a look-at-me diva. Which is fine, I guess, but I have no interest in rooting for that kind of a player. Or her father.

Her dad sucks. As for being a diva, I'd say the Williams sisters are 10 times as bad, at least. Serena especially got caught up in all that. She could have probably gone down as one of the most dominant women of all time if she'd maintained focus.

a couple of things after thumbing through what i've missed of this thread.

TNfan does no less about tennis than he does basketball and that's really saying something. But enough of that.

I'm excited to have some really knowledgeable people about tennis as well. Very few of my friends of today are. Some play and know the key players, but you guys really know the terminology and the nuances in the game. I'm definitely down for a thread about every Slam.

Shrieking/screaming doesn't bother me one bit. It's as stupid as squeaky shoes. Just play. Monica Seles had a grunt. A manly grunt at that. But man did I love to watch Seles play. And I would argue that her grunt was much louder than Sharapova's, the only difference being the high pitch Sharapova has probably evens them out. I don't really understand the disdain for Sharapova. She's just a 20 year old kid living one of my dreams. She was nothing but professional and gracious in her award speech. I even felt she was genuine. Her father is crazy. That's not her fault.

As for the match itself, Ana was just hesitant all game long. She kept herself in check all game and never attacked and it was her downfall. However, Sharapova played a great game. Dominant first serve, even attacked often on her second serve and some great forehands from her that kept Ivanovic all over the court and constantly guessing. Here's to hoping we can see Ivanovic continue to grow and mature and become a great all around tennis player and pick a couple of Grand Slams.

Considering taking a short nap so I can watch the men's final later. I'm really starting to like Tsonga. He's just a flat out beast right now.

I feel the same way. Watch her speech from last year's Australian Open and you can see she is gracious in defeat, as well. Yuri didn't stick around for that speech. He does suck. But he's her dad. What's she supposed to do about him?

i just don't care for the blatantly annoying fist pump. should be reserved for big stuff, not every single point.

eh.. I'm one of those people too. I sink a par save putt, i fist pump. I hit a three in church league basketball, i fist pump. I made a leaping grab in softball in a game where we were down 5 runs and made a fist pump. I love the emotion of it all.

oh... and let's not get me started on how I act on the rare occasions I get to venture onto a tennis court.

Should be interesting to see if Djokovic can alienate the Oz crowd any more tonight after his on-court antics against Federer. No doubt they will be behind Tsonga in the final. I hope to see Tsonga win, as well. He is really beginning to come into his own.

Djokovic is on his way to winning more Grand Slams, watch out Federrer and Nadal at the French Open, we may be seeing longer mens matches. Tsonga thought the crowd was behind him at the Australian, wait until the French Open, it's gonna be crazy, I hope he can go far. I would love to see an American will a Grand Slam, Roddick and Agassi won the last in 2003, that is too long. It's great that we have tennis fans on board the nation, and cant wait until the French Open. Bill did you end up watching the game?

if, by adorable, you mean hot with a wicked forehand. we agree.

I wouldn't turn her down

just watched the men's final. tsonga is going tobe a force if he can serve like that and stay away from errors. looked to have competence at net and big shots from deep. has great wheels. maybe another annoying father, however.

he's still french, so I'll root against him at every turn.

he served an enormous 1st sv % for the week. if he keeps that up, he will be heard from a lot more.

Hate to say it, but I dont' see any majors being won by the current crop. Roddick, I fear has peaked, unless Conners can get him more focused on strategy. He has tried to rely on a monster serve and crushing forehand, needs to be able to play at the net and get froom behind the baseline. Blake may still have potential to improve more, not sure, but he tries hard. If he had the equal amount of talent as effort, he would be the next Agassi.

Your point has been mentioned in this thread and ya'll are probably right. I would like to see Roddick add to the one he has won. I am a dreamer.

I would like to see either of them win, you never know. Agassi was down and out and came back.
