I know everyone cares deeply, but I'm posting anyway. My extended Aussie preview:
The women's side is absolutely loaded at the moment. If Federer starts to fail on the men's side (which I think might be very likely), the women's side will once again take over as the more exciting version. Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic, Elena Dementieva, Dinara Safina and the Williams' sisters will be battling all year and expect to see the rankings shuffle on a weekly basis. If Sharapova can get healthy, obviously she's right back in the mix. There's also roughly 2,492 rising stars in the women's ranks of which I'm thinking Carolina Woznacki (sp?) and Lucie Safarova could pull some major upsets. I'm going on a slight limb and picking Dementieva (but cheering for Ana of course).
The men's side is slightly calmer. Nadal and Federer still seem ahead of the pack with JOKEovic nipping at their heels. Novak took a lot of heat from both the fans and the press during the US Open and with everyone laying such heavy expectations on him to join Federer and Nadal at the top, it will be interesting to see if he can continue to play so well or if he will finally crumble. It might be my dislike for the guy, but I'm thinking crumble. Andy Murray is playing lights out tennis right now. Tsonga is poised for a serious run in 2009. Outside of those 5, the only possible dark horse might be Nalbandian, who just picked up a win. I still don't trust Nadal on hardcourts and after reading that Federer was whining about wanting to push back the dates of the Aussie Open, I'm going with Tsonga. The smart money might be Murray though.
Still no real championship male contenders from the States IMO.
