That's pretty cool. I've wanted to go independent ever since I got into it. Do you have a general rating tool or do you have to go into individual raters to find the premiums of all the different companies?

I'm sure his agency subscribes to a rating service that allows him to just plug in info and see multiple rates at once.

I'm an agent. For those of you that have USAA, never leave them. Trust me.

To the rest of you, choose based on claims not on price. You'll thank me later.

If your father had USAA, you should be eligible.

I have that option but I typically go directly to who I already know is the best price and get done with it. I do more commercial stuff actually. Personal lines are tough to live on if that's all you do.

Nobody will believe that, but it's true. Nobody gets rich writing auto and homeowners insurance.

My State Farm agent disagrees.

300k yearly. For 25 years. Doesn't fool with commercial.

Must be ripping people off

I walked in the office one day and he was on the phone. Bought a house in Arizona, on a golf course, for 500k. I fell out of my chair and told him I was paying him too much apparently. He goes there often. Barely at the office anymore.

Your State Farm guy is probably required to write "x" amount of life and health via his contract. The agents around here are set up that way too. Good $ in life and health, but I doubt all he writes are cars and houses.

I would never work for State Farm btw.

I'll put this the best way I can, he caters to the Latino market very heavily and has about 70% of that market.

I am researching insurance since I just moved here. I have had Progressive since 2011, but I found that the insurance has dropped by roughly 20 dollars when I applied for a State Farm quote. It was only ten with Progressive so I am going with State Farm. Progressive bumped the price roughly 3 dollars over the past year. Other than that no problems but I wanna save money.

How do I put this diplomatically? My experience has been that any company with "Farm" in it tends to routinely overstep their actual expertise.

You're switching over $10?

Ignore them. Congrats to you. Save it where you can

Nobody is taking shots at the guy. All I was getting at is that it wouldn't be the best move to go from one insurance company where you have good loss experience over a few years to another over a small amount of money. I didn't realize he was speaking in monthly terms rather than annual or semiannual terms.

Sorry. My pop was more at thrasher and his arrogance.

That's something I hadn't really considered. I've only been paying for insurance for a few years now. Is there a benefit in staying with the same company over an extended time?

Companies overplay it a little, but if there's a questionable claim situation, you're probably more likely to get the benefit of the doubt the longer you've been with the company with good claims experience.

I don't know that there's really a right answer as far as how much you should be saving before you switch though. For some people it's hundreds and for some it's $1. Just depends on your finances and what value you place on your current company/agent.
