Auto Qualifiers Need Done Away With

If they win their championship, I am not sure they are any less deserving than Miami or SMU to get in. The only difference between them is that Clemson had the stones to play Georgia and South Carolina out of conference. If they are champs they should get in, but just 1 ACC team should get in though. No automatic byes for conference champions would be rational, which means it will never be considered.

Take the best teams and to away with automatic qualifiers. Now, we have Clemson backing into a possible playoff spot if they luck up and win the ACC.
What determines the best teams? Journalism majors ranking teams based on their opinions or on the field play? If you don’t have conference champions then you have no need for conferences.

There should be a reward for winning your conference. If they took away the AQs and we missed out on a playoff because of it, the cretins here would revolt. Who cares if the 16th best team gets in over the 12th best team?

Er, maybe the 12th place team….

But I think you miss the point. I think most would agree that conference champs should be in…just not automatically in the Top 4.

What's even worse IMO, is giving the top 4 seeds to the 4 highest ranked conference champions. That just compounds the insanity.

I believe the conference champions should get rewarded. It's a very difficult decision of what separates the conference. Me personally I think as long as the NCAA is involved they need to convince the conferences to limit choosing for themselves who they play out of conference. Perhaps allow one weekend if you want to schedule cupcakes but as for the SEC, B1G, BIG12, ACC they should have set weekends for conference challenges like basketball has of like ACC vs SEC. Big 12 vs Big10 or whatever but like one week one conference vs another another week one agaisnt another.

Then whoever has the best overall record in conference vs conference will receive the 1 seed in the playoff. Then 2 and so on instead of subjective because clearly everyone is trying to decide is Indiana and Penn States weaker schedule but better records are better than Tennessee and Georgia which played tougher schedule but lost an extra.

The only reason conference champs are included is money.

Meaning it is the only way to justify continuing with the conference championship game money grab, that serves no other practical purpose.

Agree, it’s a win win. Winner gets in and money flows.

It's the only way to make it fair. Those sucky conferences are likely a one bid league while the better conferences steal a lot of at large bids.

It depends on who the top 5 ranked conference champions are. UNLV is not guaranteed anything.
UNLV was ranked 22 I guess they could take Boise state's spot .

But
ACC
MW
BIG 12 5-7 Kansas beat the 3 of the top 4 teams BYU, Iowa st, Colorado.
Iowa St plays Arizona st for the Big 12 championship.

IS there another conference that could take their spot? There is Army but they are behind UNLV.

Notre Dame needs to join a conference.

If you do that, there’s zero reason to continue having conference championship games

I'm OK with the auto qualifiers, but it should be like the NCAA basketball tournament - they shouldn't get preferential seeding. Right now, we have a scenario where the 11th best team can get the #4 seed and the #5 seed ends up with an easier path than the #1 and #2 seeds. It's a terrible format.

For the B1G and the SEC, both were already going to get in. Now it’s just a meaningless game that adds another week of wear and tear, and one less week of rest.

So we are down to ….it’s just a meaningless money grab.
This is what I've been saying. It's a pointless game that can only have downsides no upsides.

You either get players hurt or you let a 3 or 4 loss team waltz into the playoffs. It's a shameless money grab just like the men's basketball conference tournaments.

There’s already no reason to. Only money.

Texas won the SEC. Oregon won the B1G. SMU won the ACC. Only the Big 12 is in doubt.
