Tennessee pulled off a stunner Wednesday, picking up the commitment of 4-star tight end Dominick Wood-Anderson beating out Alabama, Texas A&M and Oregon for the No. 1 JUCO tight end in the county. "I'm going to Tennessee!," Wood-Anderson told VolQuest earlier Wednesday morning. "I felt like I was at home. I believe in what coach (Jeremy) Pruitt is going to do. I love the whole staff."
Wood-Anderson picked up an offer from Tennessees previous staff, but Pruitt, Brian Niedermeyer and Tyson Helton convinced the Arizona Western C.C. product to give the Vols a serious look this December. Their efforts paid off. Both Pruitt and Niedermeyer recruited Wood-Anderson at Alabama, and they were able to use that relationship to secure the tight end's final official visit last weekend.
While Alabama and Texas A&M made strong pushes, Tennessee was able to pull off the upset due to Wood-Anderson's comfort with the staff and opportunity for early playing time. "I like how real (Pruitt) is and how determined he is to turnaround that program," he said. "I have a super good relationship with Niedermeyer. I can trust him. I know that hes going to go to bat for me any day."
With with senior tight end Ethan Wolf headed to the NFL, there's an opening for Wood-Anderson to come in and compete for a starting spot on Day 1. That sales pitch definitely resonated for a guy hoping to make it to league in a couple years.
"I never really looked at Tennessee as a school Id be going to, but after sitting down with coach Pruitt and talking to the whole staff, it just caught my eye," he said. "Im going to be utilized the way I want to be utilized. Obviously, Im a hybrid tight end, but in this offense I can still showcase my blocking." "Me being an athletic tight end, they want to use me everywhere," he said, comparing his game to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed. "I have that go-get it mentality. At the end of the day, thats just what it is. I compete my butt off."
Before his OV last weekend, Wood-Anderson solicited Vol fans for Twitter followers. Big Orange Nation responded immediately, bumping up his following to more than 20K. "To be honest yea, that was just for jokes and games but it caught me off guard," he said. "They are die-hard fans. Theyll got bat for the football team any day. They want to see the program back on the rise. They support the hell out of them." Wood-Anderson, a former Texas commit, will enroll in January. With No. 16 jersey retired, he plans to wear No. 18 for the Vols. "That (No. 16) is taken. Obviously, Peyton Manning is the GOAT. Hes my favorite quarterback."
