Back on the Heup Train

I was fully convinced we would lose. Tried to talk myself into it all week, honestly, just so my emotions wouldn’t run away with me this game. Well the first half went exactly to my expectations. Offense played abysmally, although imagine if Nico doesn’t fumble on the opening drive (we were moving the ball).

Finally got it going there. D-Samp is the heart of the offense and maybe the team. Became newly convinced we’d lose it in overtime, lol. Defense is so stout, just smothering. On the field way, way too much the last two games and they’ve given up less than 20 points both times.

Happy with the win. Seems silly to gripe about a win in this series, regardless of how bad this UF team is (and they’ve been playing pretty well lately). We have a lot of glaring issues, but it ain’t my job to fix them. Not sure what to expect next week from either team, but bring on the TSIO. GBO.

I will eat crow. Heupel, despite questionable play calling, mistakes, and frustration, was able to at least hang a W over the Gators.

I don’t care if UF is bad this year. Their roster is just as talented as ours and we rarely beat them.

A win over Florida is usually ugly, too close for comfort, and leaves both fan bases feeling icky. However, I’m going to choose to celebrate instead of lament over our glaring issues. If you don’t celebrate tonight then you are just a loser.
It was ugly in 2022. Gators lost like 7 games that year and we barely beat them. We had no defense

Not all the way on the train. Still seeing bad play calls in critical situation. Punted the ball from deep in your own territory to a returner who just burned you last series on a punt and you punt it right back to him. No way he should have touched that ball.
I felt like the coaches called a game that gave players lots of chances to make plays, namely the QB. They schemed plays that got WR’s open, but the throws were off. Then you factor in how the line play affects what they can call, and I don’t have much issue with the coaching. If just 3-4 of those throws that most SEC quarterbacks make were made, Vols win by 10 at least. Guys were getting open often. Either they weren’t seen, or the throws were off.

I always love it when we beat UF. But back on the Huep train fully? Not even close. How many times have we seen Heupel get a late game lead and play scared and not to lose? He did it against UF in 2022 and this year. And it almost cost us both times.

Heupel’s play calling abilities are a serious question mark. His clock management still suffers. And I feel like he has shifted from living the offense to living the defense more.
Well, we do have a damn good defense.
Play calling isn't a problem. You don't know what to call before the play, you just don't like the results sometimes. In your tiny bubble it must be bad call whenever it doesn't work

Well he’s won the Orange bowl, beat Alabama and Florida I guess he can stay awhile.

After some time to think about it... I really don't know how good we are. Florida was thought of as bad coming in, but their 2 losses are actually looking like good teams now, and Arkansas isn't done yet. Our defense looks incredible, Our offense has been ineffective. Tonight, a lot was on the OL, but when the big plays were there, Nico couldn't hit them. Maybe it's something he can fix, because he was hitting them for the first few weeks, doesn't matter who we played, he should've hit those throws. Realistically, we hit those shots, it's a 3 score game, assuming we don't go back to run, run, screen. I want to think Heupel has never produced bad offenses, maybe have some faith in his ability to fix it, but who knows. 6 games in, I have no idea who we are.

The offense and Nico are regressing as the season rolls on, two more turnovers tonight, the interception was very Milton like, stared the receiver down the entire way, I'm not sure Heupel has the staff to coach up and improve these uber talents, Milton was incredibly talented but couldn't do anything special, I'm not of the opinion the Nico experiment has failed, but I am hoping that McIntyre enrolls in January and punts basketball season this year.

Never thought that in year 4 you'd be fielding your worst OL, as a coach synonymous with offense. For the second year - FIX the daum OL, then worry about the QB play.

Nico is a redshirt freshman and we have the 5th best rushing offense in the nation. I love that we're building off of the rushing offense we created last season. My only three critiques would be to stop throwing it on first down, insert in some more curl routes or slants and stop going for the homerun bomb with every throw. We were killing teams with the slants in the beginning of the season. And why do we get a holding call every time nico scrambles. Where are the designed qb runs that we used to demolish Iowa?

I disagree because UF had some atrocious play calling. Florida fans are yelling about Billy’s OT strategy. Why run plays that develop behind the line of scrimmage in overtime?

They definitely did. Running to the outside on fourth and two inches, too many men on the field to end the half which squandered 3 points, a few more I can’t think of. Sun Belt Billy made his fair share of mistakes. Florida is a talented team, even when they are down they aren’t some directional school. They still pull good kids.

I’m with Heup, but his offense requires QB play at an elite level. It has to happen quickly in the helmet and the eyes. I like Nico, but he’s just nowhere near Hooker in running the offense yet. I actually thought he should be benched in this game, but I don’t think that he’s incapable overall. This new pro league that is NCAAf is still being figured out.
I don't think that will happen because the same reason Joe wasn't, there's no one that's any better. Not Gaston Moore or Jake Merklinger we will have to roll with Nico his quick decision making and hitting open receivers has reared its ugly head and getting stripped of the ball twice vs Arky and bobbling a snap in that game at the end and next play running out of bounds game over. Fast forward to UF everything is going great on a early drive keep that going and we set the table for the game but Nico fumbles on a read give to Sampson and later throws an interception. We were fortunate to win with the way our O played.

Our defense won that game yesterday. Much improvement over last year. Kept bailing out the offense the entire game

Somebody posted in the game thread that our offense is nothing but run up the middle and bombs and they were spot on
Sadly, every one of those bombs were open and should have been TDs or at least completed. If the coach schemes and calls a play and the QB just misses, then it cripples your playbook if your star player cannot execute.
