Back to Maui (‘23)

I am sure CRB will have the team on Island Time, best he can, but tipping against the orangemen @ 9:30am local will be a test (for all involved). I have never liked morning sporting events. Not as a student athlete, or as a fan.

I always find it so amazing how a place can burn so completely like that, yet every once in a while there is a building or home completely unfazed by the destruction around it.
It makes the stories from the Chicago Fire and other historic fires more immediately believable.

I have a friend who group up on Maui who has suggested a charity if anybody is interested. No idea what the teams are all going to do in November but maybe we can do something now.

My prayers are with the wonderful people of Hawaii and Lahaina where this tournament is to be played. They have been truly devastated, hopefully this tournament will be played and be a diversion for their pain and losses.

I wouldn't be surprised if the venue for this will change. Most of Lahaina's downtown area is gone. Blocks and blocks of historic buildings, businesses, restauranta, bars, gift shops, etc are no longer. The Civic Center where the games are played is just north of there. The famous Ka'anapali Golf Resort is just further north, which could possibly host the teams for meetings, restaurants, etc. Will be interesting to see what happens. My thoughts are with the wonderful people of Lahaina and to the families who lost loved ones.

Reminds me of the Gatlinburg fire. My in-laws were impacted by that one. Just awful.

Yeah I was taking about that with that same friend, because Gatlinburg and Maui are both places where tourism covers up a lot of poverty.

I’m guessing Gatlinburg had a lot of people who owned rental cabins. Obviously, that’s not as serious because it’s not a primary residence. But we enjoyed several trips there. It was a true log cabin, so I’m sure it went quickly in the fire.

That's pretty much what comes to mind when you think about Gatlinburg, but at least 900 families were left homeless by the fire and received aid from Dolly Parton.

Well, sure. People are going to be homeless when their only residence gets destroyed, and there are people that live full time there. That doesn’t necessarily equate to poverty though.

I was just comparing because it was dry with a perfect setup of very gusty winds that came in within a day. I believe Gatlinburg reported winds over 80 mph. Terrible circumstances.
