It wasn't in the Maui Invitational (which didn't exist yet), but one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history occurred at the Lahaina Civic Center in December of 1982. Chaminade beat #1 Virginia, with All-American, Ralph Sampson.

Chaminade 77, No. 1 Virginia 72: College basketball's shocking upset remembered
- Chaminade had a 6'6" center guarding the 7'4" Ralph Sampson. The Chaminade center outscored Sampson 19-12. Sampson only attempted 9 shots, for some reason.
- Virginia had already beaten Georgetown (with Patrick Ewing), Houston (with Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler), and Utah (with Tom Chambers).
- Chaminade had lost their previous game to a mediocre Division 2 school, named Wayland Baptist.
- Vegas oddsmakers did not even post a line on the game.
