Back to the 60s, Police beating college students

I'm sure there's plenty of students there who have nothing to do with the protest circus.

Too bad for them.
The vast majority have nothing to do with it.

My daughter missed her graduation ceremony due to Covid. She attended her Sister in Law's graduation at the same uni Saturday. She told me she closed her eyes and imagined it was hers. She cried. One of her former professors saw her crying in the audience and mentioned it to her afterward.

Feel badly for those young men and women. Special moment most look forward to.

I knew some who would've been happier to skip commencement.

I have a degree from Columbia---and the graduation event was wonderful--so this is sad. I'm not sure why it is necessary to cancel graduation.
I'm not opposed to the idea of student protests--there was one, with a smallish encampment, when I started there---but there should be a time out
for graduation and if protestors can't agree with that idea then I can't agree with them.

Saw a pic of trump in courtroom. Deputies (Bailiffs???) in the background. I wondered who has jurisdiction in a courtroom...deputies or secret service? Are both allowed their weapons?

Any idea?
Jurisdiction in that context is not something I really deal with. In my experience, it is more of a pass/fail than a priority. They should both “pass” for otherwise lawful arrests. There may be some problems if secret service tried to arrest him for local crimes without a warrant (I.e. he throws a diaper at the judge and Secret Service tries to arrest him for the New York crime of assault), but it’s a problem that seems unlikely to be meaningful.

Fun anecdote: Saw a guy try to do a runner out of county court once and he got tackled by an attorney (sadly, not his attorney).

My question was poorly communicated.

I was wondering whose judgement supercedes the other (if any)? Do deputies tell SS agents no weapons (to protect the candidate) or vice versa (to protect the court)?

Protesters who are true believers would have a point, if practicing true conviction to their concerns, to say "how can we stop protesting for a meaningless ceremony while Palestinians are experiencing genocide", wouldn't they?

Ohhhh. I see.

I have no idea.

Legally, I think it would be the judge subject to some possible appellate oversight. Practically, unless he’s an especially arrogant judge, he would leave that up to the departments and officers who provide courthouse security.

I bet the SS and Baliffs Rochambeau for it in the hallway.

Secret Service statute 18 USC (c)(B) authorizes agents to carry firearms. Does this supersede state law?

You are a ringing endorsement of the university.

With the tuition they charge, they can do housecall commencements

I personally would have loved to walk across the stage if my stage had been my front porch on my East zknoxville hood mansion.

I knew a few people who felt that way. Most people, back then, wanted to experience the event.

Different strokes.

Not at all.

You know the vast majority of countries enjoy the exact same freedom you're describing? Might come as a shock to you.
We are talking here my guy based on the topic and current events. No sidebar needed when the stance was those enjoying the campus protest freedoms don’t enlist.

Nice Jeff Daniels “The Newsroom” answer

Did you attend the Jewish Theological Seminary during your time at that fine University?

Thank you good sir! He finished his Bachelors in 3 years by busting his rear end and doing 3 years of summer classes (all while working part time).
Nice job! Hardly ever hear about that type of discipline and work ethic now a days. If he takes that approach in his career, we will all be working for him soon.

Lol, this joker told his grandfather that this is just his first step. He plans on getting a Masters and a phD. Very determined young man that his mother (wife shed a few tears during and after the event) and I are extremely proud of.
