Backyard Bird Watchers

A quick google search reveals that Starlings were introduced by late 19th century Shakespeare enthusiasts who wanted to have the bird mentioned by William in Central Park, NYC. They’ve now spread across most of North America.

Well, they’re an invasive species that muscles out native cavity nesters. I’m not fond of them, either. The story is that an Englishman brought them to North America because his French mistress missed their caterwauling. 🙄
Nope. Thespians in New York wanted to do Shakespeare plays in the audience of the starlings that Shakespeare wrote about. The let about 10 free in Central Park and they immediately flee away. So this same group get more a second time and this time some stay this time for them to act in front of. Now they are somewhat filling the niche of the Passenger Pigeon. I agree though they are taking out a lot of native cavity nesters. American Kestrel is one that has taken a huge hit because of European Starlings
