Bad Florida Game Experience

The cops down here are bullies...I saw it all the time when I worked security for the Dolphins, Canes etc...You should have turned on your phone and recorded every single thing they said to you in case they tried throwing you out for no reason...My buddy got out of a speeding ticket by using his phone to record the conversation between him and a cop....They found out the cop was lying throughout the conversation..He got suspended without pay...Not sure for how long but hey if you got the technology use it!

First of all, I want to apologize for writing a book, but I just want to share my experience. I know this is a couple of weeks old but I don't get on here as much as I used to. Anyways, A couple of weeks ago my and my buddies made the trip down to Florida. They had been to the swamp several times but it was my first time. I wasn't sure what to expect but we had a great tailgate and everyone we met was extremely nice. It wasn't even the least bit hostile... at all... We went into the game and got to our seats. We had bought 8 seats together. Well the seats were right in the corner of the endzone. The row only sat 8 people and the bench had an angle on the corner were 2 people sit. The row in front of us is exactly the same size but only sits 7. So they were a little more comfortable than us cramming 8 guys into a little row. Both my buddies sitting on each isle were repeatedly told by the police (not ushers) that if they didn't get their legs out of the isle they would have to leave. They kept bugging us while Florida fans were standing in the Isle watching the game. We were sitting hip to hip in the 90 degree heat. It was miserable. We were sitting mostly in a mix of TN fans and Florida Fans and the TN band was only like one section to our right. After we had the Pick6 we went a little wild and got really excited. The bleachers in front of me were only like 4in higher than the concrete and I stepped on them during the excitement to high five my buddies. I was immediately grabbed by the cop and told that if my foot hit the bleacher again I would be escorted out.. I was really apologetic and said Sorry 100 times. He walked off. Well in the second quarter a couple of Florida fans were standing in front of us... so naturally we stood up.. It's no big deal to me... I don't care about people standing. One of my buddies is about 6-6 250+ and was standing up next to me and this absolutely rude FL guy THREE rows up kept yelling at him saying "I WISH THAT BIG M***F***** would sit down blah blah blah and so I just about lost it and turned around and told him to just simply shutup. His reply was "what are you going to do about it" of course my hot head "I said come down here and find out" Why one guy that was 5'7" tops was trying to start a fight with 8 guys I don't think I will ever understand... Anyways.. I turn around and of course the Cop is back... With back up from a State Trooper. Surprisingly I wasn't escorted out. I think mainly because I never cussed back at the guy. But instead I was told to sit down and that if any of us stood up again we would be kicked out. There wasn't much to cheer about the rest of the game anyways but Florida fans in front of me were allowed to stand and block my view while I had to remain seated. It was complete BS.. I turned around and gave a gesture to the cop like "WTF you're gonna let these guys stand in front of me but I can't stand????" He wouldn't even acknowledge me... Even Florida fans were embarrassed by the cop acting like that towards us. That ONE guy behind us and the COP were the only A-HOLES we met the entire weekend. Florida fans were apologizing to us for them deliberately picking on us and not leaving us alone. It was just crazy.. I mean I know that kind of thing probably happens everywhere but it was just complete BS and ruined not just my experience but a lot of people around us. I guess I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience or if this just only happens to me...

I actually had a very similar experience on my only visit to the swamp, I think it was 2003? It was the year we won a low scoring game at UF, caught a hail mary at the half, etc.

We were approached by the cops on multiple occasions, told to sit down, shut-up, etc... but never thrown out luckily. But I did see them throw out at least 10 vols fans. It was ridiculous.

If nothing else, I would have at least reported it to somebody, maybe even another cop, or something just to let them know that you don't understand why gator fans were allowed to stand up, but you weren't.

I don't understand them telling people to sit down and shut up. It's a football game. I can understand if you're screaming at the top of your lungs non stop or being overly obnoxious but come on.

A bit ironically, some of the best usher work I've seen was at Vandy Stadium. In 2006 I had tickets in the middle of the Vandy section and was surrounded by Vandy fans, and this guy in front of me was a complete d-bag. Wouldn't shut up about the Vandy win the year before, dropping f-bombs, and after about 10 minutes the Vandy ushers sent him packing. Even the Vandy fans couldn't stand him.

I went to the UT/VT Gatorbowl the year it was actually played in Gainesville. There were as many deputies as their were fans in the stands. I will never go back to that crap hole.

If it happened exactly like you said, then that's ridiculous; I'm not calling you a liar but people tend to leave out details in accounts like this, and frankly it's just your word on a pretty anonymous messageboard.

But I do believe you for the most part because I've seen jerk ushers/cops at games before. One of the worst examples was at LP Field once when the Raiders were in town. A group of Titan fans were ragging the crap out of a lone Raider fan, baiting him, cursing at him, and as bad of a reputation that Raider fans get, he was basically trying to mind his own business. Ushers came up twice and both times all the Titan fans pointed at him and claimed he was cursing and throwing things at them. The third time they just hauled him away and didn't even ask him his side of the story. I even tried to tell one of the cops he wasn't doing anything but they didn't care.

Yeah I mean I'm not leaving out any details... I understand the rules... Yeah I shouldn't of stood on the bleachers, but there were 3 FL girls 2 rows down that did it the entire game... It was obvious he was picking on us the entire game... and like I said besides him and the A Hole a few rows up, everyone was extremely nice.. It wasn't in the least bit hostile..

I was there in section 47. There was a cop there that kept saying to people to sit down. Nobody listened to him. Some guy several rows above took his shirt off and he kept telling him to put his shirt on. That guy didn't listen to him either. I think it was th same guy that was escorted.

How does he have authority to tell him to put his shirt on, unless it's specifically mentioned in the stadium rules that you can't remove your shirt?

Me and a bunch of my buddys went down in 03 and when we was tailgating there were 2 cops that stayed on our case they were complete *******s they followed us around every where just tryin to find a reason to take us to jail. The cops had a NY accent that explained a lot. I personally will never go back again it was the worst away game I have ever been to. The best place to go for an away game in my opinion is GA everybody there has always been real nice even the cops. I really do hope our knoxville cops aren't like that to visiting fans because that just ruins anybodys trip. GO VOLS!

What the hell is that suppose to mean? I'm from NY and I am not a jerk! Quit stereotyping people. I could say Southern people are red neck hicks!! Jerk!

Never once have I acted in a proper manner and received rude attitude from a cop. I here it all the time from people but not once have I had an experience where a cop was being a dick as the OP says.

Glad you are perfect. I'm not... I never said I acted in a perfect manner.. I did stand up on the bleachers in celebration... I admit that.... I broke that rule in excitement. But a simple "sir can you try not to do that again" would of worked just fine... My point was that the cops were looking for any reason at all to kick Vol fans out of the game and act like dicks for no reason.

I was there and that was my third trip. The fans were so nice and respectful. To me it was just another reminder of how far we have fallen and no longer respected but to be honest I really didnt mind being treated nice. I have a short fuse after we lose and I would have throat punched someone. Anyway, good times!

sorry about your experience

the problem with law enforcement in gainesville (don't know if this was the case on this occasion) is that so many are of an age where they are not allowed to watch rated r movies without a parent.

i've heard from many people that law enforcement is actually becoming an issue about coming to games for issues before, during and after games.

We were sitting right next to the band and we had two rent-a-cops walking around our section telling people not to stand on the bleachers. I don't remember them threatening to kick anybody out though (of course it was the UT section).
After the game was a different story, of course gator fans talked trash, which is fine because that is part of what makes sports events fun. However on our way back to our car, we crossed the main strip with a group of people and happened to be the last ones in the group and a gator fan in one of those piece a piece of crap cars (you know the ones that think they are fixed up but in reality the rims cost more than the car is worth) decided he wanted to floor it and almost hit me, he probably got about a foot from hitting me just to be a jerk.
The traffic was terrible trying to get out of there. We tailgated in the lot right next to the krispy kreme and it took a while to get out. Other than the though it was a fine experience with the exception of the game.

They're abusing their power and showing favoritism.

Knowing you were already on the hot seat however you probably should have ignored the Florida guy talking about your friend. That unfortunately gave the cop the excuse to escort you out that he was looking for.

Sorry all that happened.

It seems fans of certain schools like UGA for instance are high on crack or whatever makes them act as mindless as they act. When they bring shame to their on fans around them you know they are not the norm. I dare say they act the same at any event they attend.

Went to many games back in the 90's after getting out of the Navy...each time had issues with my truck getting keyed...windshield wipers broken...radio antenna broken (for most of the regular posters on here...that is a metallic device necessary for older radios to receive signals)...even had hood dented one year. I still go...only we RENT a vehicle after flying into town (I make more money now...lol).
