I don’t have but very little info about it , I was just wondering about why it would be under its own power under such an important harbor entrance without tug guides.

Edit : I do know every port and Harbor master is completely different in how they do things . That’s just the first thing I thought about when I saw it this morning

Prayers for all families involved in this tragedy.

Easy to say 'told ya so', about the Nations infrastructure. Moving ahead, it has to be something we look at.

Where will money come from? I can think off top of my head where we can find some Billions to shave. Senate, Scotus, and Congressional salaries can suck a phatwon. They're awful. They deserve to be paid in bannanas... $50K should be about right, Havent done **** in decades.

Rural broadband buildout? Important, but, having witnessed firsthand seeing fiber be built to a stand of trees. It needs oversight.

No more bailouts. Let em fold.

There, easy as she goes.
No excuse for this. Sunshine Skyway collapse under similar circumstances in 1980 led to it being rebuilt with special obstacles to protect the support piers. Why didn’t this bridge have them too?

Ya know, if we took some of the wealth made from decimating Appalachia with Opiods... or...or institute the Newer Deal to get third generation welfarers to work. We could do it. Or at least get it started, then one a you Redbirds can shift it o private business. I dont care.
What money did the govt make in opioids?

Newer deal? You one of those progressive thinkers who believe Fdr actually helped lift the US out of the depression?

The govt has plenty of revenue to address the items it is assigned by our laws.

Yes, I believe the Government absolutely has the ability to seize and do as it sees fit with monies made from absolute wreckless and 'legal' illegal manufacture of, distribution of, and sell of prescription narcotics. It is nothing less than the exact same thing that Sinaloa, and Gulf Cartels do outside the law. Every dollar those mother ****ers earned should be doubled and given back, as its cost us un told billions in funerals, hospital, and municipal expenses.

And you're damn right I believe in FDR, further I believe he assisted in revitalization by increasing consumer confidence, at a time where there was none.

As for government dollars, we have plenty? What happened to the magic wand?

So the govt should steal money without oversight? Wow, not many true believers in overreaching govt power in here. Please stay and entertain us. As for FDR you should read up on what his actions actually did. The war saved us, not massive govt. We would have been in huge trouble without it.

There is no magic wand in DC as the govt needs a machete taken to it. Massive govt with out of control spending is killing this country. The policies decimate cities like Baltimore for generations.

I wonder how long this will have the harbor closed, month or two at least. Lost lives and lost livelihoods, terrible tragedy.
They will move heaven and earth to get the port back open - but yea, gonna be a while.

It took him like 9 years to do that. The American economy always bounces back, and this was the one time it took forever...he was piloting the ship for most of it. It's funny that he gets credit for righting the ship because things got better. Of course they get better when you had a whole decade to get there.

You know we had an even bigger market crash in 1920 and bounced back within a year, right?

...and 1873, 1884, 1893, 1896, 1901, and 1907.

On a related note, I am not cheerleader for the Federal Reserve but as soon as you hear "We didn't have these financial crises until the Federal Reserve was created" you know that person has no clue what they are talking about.

Seems like we had more ups and downs before but the dips got more devastating after. For example, the Great D was the only back to back depressions in history and we have good reason to believe the FR had a hand in that.

Economic terrorism could not have planned this any better. Impact is in the tens of billions.

1. Busiest port on east coast is now down for unknown time.
2. Even when they clear the debris so ship operations can resume, the only other travel is through the tunnels. That means all hazardous waste and certain types of trucks which could only use the Key bridge are now out for a long time.
3. Ripple effect on inflationary prices as shippers scramble to use other, already packed ports will be biggest impact
4. Cost to rebuild bridge in corrupt Baltimore can be assumed to be astronomical and easily take 5-7 years.

What I do not understand is why the ship did not have towboats taking it out of harbor? Or do they not have towboats there? It seemed like it was going pretty fast.
1. its not the busiest port on the east coast. Not even top 5.

New York/New Jersey
Savanah
Virginia
Charleston
Boston
Jacksonville
Portland (Maine)
Baltimore

Only things I have seen Baltimore as the busiest port for is Coal Exports, and some specific car imports.

2. Hazardous waste and some other types of shipping will have to go around the city, but there is already an interstate bypass. Instead of going east across the bridge, they can go west around the city. it may add an hour to their routes, but its not the end of the world. huge headache, but schedules will easily adjust.

3. going back to 1, its not the busiest port, its #8. it will hurt, and the inflation from that will only be for the couple months it takes them to clear this. IF, and its a big if, they are smart the port of Baltimore would use this time to rush some needed repairs/upgrades/changes to their port infrastructure, so when the water way is back up, they can do even more business.

4. true

the video was sped way up. at least 8x real speed. and there has already been a fake video about the bridge explosion that was taken down. so I would be careful before buying too much hype around this.

the ships (Dali) max speed was 25mph. if it was fully laden, it would have taken it at least 12 hours to reach that. I very much doubt it was topping out in a port.

this bridge (Francis Scott Key) was opened in 1977. it predates that incident by 3 years.

The Skyway Bridge collapsed in 1980. Construction on the new Skyway began in 82 and was completed in 87.

That was in hurricane winds and fog. This was in clear weather. How does the power go off 2x on one of these things at precisely the wrong moment? I am not claiming anything, just saying this is not really the same as Skyway bridge, even though there are def some similarities.

I was pointing out the time to rebuild.
