Bottom line: Bama and UF coaches do not favor expansion because they have a natural recruiting advantage due to the pelthora of in-state talent in the states where they are located and they do not want to risk a leveling of the landscape when Texas becomes and open recruiting ground for SEC schools.
So what's really going on with this leak (assuming the linked article is correct)?
If the big hang up is Alabama wanting to play Tennessee (I'm somewhat skeptical of that claim), that's the kind of thing you hammer out behind closed doors. This seems to have been leaked for some other purpose.
Send Vandy to the west and bring both Bama and Auburn east. We then get both Bama and Auburn every year, yet still can make Vandy our keeper.
LSU loves this plan. Bama and Auburn have won 11 of 19 West Division titles. Moving them both to the east would completely screw up the balance. The SEC evenly split up AU, UA, LSU, UF, UT, UGA in 92 on purpose (and also evenly split UK, VU, MSU and UM). There is not going to be a division that has 5 of the 6 winningest programs while the other has 3 of the 4 worst programs.
