Bama fans discussing Cutcliffe...

If he's so great, why did our offense look so lackluster against one of the worst d's in the country last saturday?

You know, the offense only scored 17 last week, but I don't really attribute that to poor coordinating.

Not counting the last drive where we made a first down and ran out the clock, the offense had 6 posessions: 2 touchdown drives covering 65 & 80 yards, 2 drives resulting in FG attempts covering 69 & 70 yards, and 2 punts. The quarterback threw for 240 yards, and the TB position rushed for 117 and right at 4 yards a carry.

The game shouldn't have been close, and I can see blaming the defense for not getting the offense more touches, but 4 long drives in 6 posessions is pretty good offensive production. Cutcliff was not the problem in the Kentucky game.

The insanely awful special teams play really hurt our offense. Whoever is coaching our return teams needs to be punched in the stomach.

The fumble before the half was big, and so was the missed FG.

It was a really weird game, though.

I don't know if I have ever seen a game where a team only had 7 posessions (8 if you count the 2 seconds Taylor had posession before the fumble.)

EDIT: remember that on the last two "official" posessions of the first half, we did not take an offesnive snap.

EDITED EDIT: I tried to post the drive summary, but it came out a mess. You can find them here-- ESPN.com - NCF - Drive Chart

I think Cut is too savy to take that pressure cooker job, especially after coming back from a heart attack. Its not worth the grief. He did grow up in Alabama though.

He married a Tennessee girl, with family ties still in the Knoxville area, his kids grew up in Knoxville, and he has 2 sons currently serving as managers for the Vols football team.

After his heart attack, I think he will carefully choose a very good situation to come in as a new coach and not the pressure cooker that the Tide program creates.

great answer there. So Cutcliffe has no blame being our OC that our running game sucked? Just like he did 10 years ago, he ran the same plays. If he's so great, why did our offense look so lackluster against one of the worst d's in the country last saturday?

For starters, you can never underestimate the drive of your opponent. UK had an opportunity to beat GA and TN in the same season. You think they were going to roll over for us?

Agreed on how bad special teams has been, but that's been the situation for a number of years now.

Sanders as Cutcliffe's replacement was brilliant for one game (a certain Fiesta Bowl), but after that point....

I think that's a pretty strong indictment of the coaches. The special teams have been so bad for so many years and yet we've been unable to fix it. Switching the return man every couple of games isn't going to solve anything. We've got tons of talented athletes capable of taking it to the house on any return, but that will never happen if the rest of the Vols on the field don't learn how to set up the return.

Also, Sanders did a pretty good job in 2004.

The real problem I have with bad special teams is that I think they are one of the best barometers of the actual talent level.

I think special teams, with the exception of kickoff returns, has improved this year. Hefney has provided a spark for the punt return team. The coverage on both punts and kickoffs has been pretty darn good if you take out a couple of breakdowns.

Kickoff returns though have been absolutely dreadful.

Dreadful is not the word. It is patently inexplicable that with as many athletes as we have, we can't find a guy to catch the ball and run straight at the wedge and if nothing else just hold onto the football and hit the pile at the 22 yard line.

No Offense (no pun intended), but No thanks.

Great OC, but not so sure about a HC. We need a proven one this time... LOL! A proven HC that is.

I like Cutcliffe, but I doubt you have to worry about Bama hiring a guy who was fired by Ole Miss and has had heart problems.

What I find interesting is that we UT fans want BAMA to hire some nobody coach so UT can continue to beat Bama year in and year out. I personally wouldn't care if they got Saban or Spurrier or any other high profiled coaches. If you want to be the best you need to beat the best.

No, if you want to be the best, you need to beat the people you play. That is the reason it is so difficult for SEC teams to reach the NC game. They do not have to play, say, one BCS caliber team in the regular season, then one more in the bowl; they have a handful of top tier teams to overcome in their own division, plus the inter-division rivalries, plus a tough OOC matchup (unless you are Auburn,) plus a championship, plus the bowl. It is a far more difficult task than running the Big East Gauntlet, where you might get two good teams each year, or the Pac-10, where Cal passes for a second test if you can get by USC.

The SEC is tough enough. I hope they hire a Gump.

cut is a bama boy, despite what he's done at UT. kind of ironic. I still don't know that it's a huge loss though if we lose him. Everyone blamed Sanders for his playcalling, don't forget he learned from Cut and Cut is once again using the same old bland play calls. That being said, he's still the best qb coach in the country so maybe i'm being too harsh

be glad we have cut, and for that matter i am glad we have cpf, go vols:thumbsup:

Cutcliffe said tonight that he had not been contacted by Bama. Did not expect to be contacted by Bama, and that he is very happy where he is at.

oh yeah, thats why you guys remain an independent, ND's desire to play top competion. Only 2 good teams you played you lost.

You're being too nice. Lost isn't the right word. It would be more correct to say, run over, smacked around, and humiliated on national television.
