Bama Fires their Coach

Finebaum said Marshall is at the top of Bama's list and they're prepared to pay big money on this hire.

If this happens I'll tip my hat to the Bama athletic department. They've grasped the concept of ROI and spend money to make money.

Heard same thing on Nashville radio this morning.

Marshall makes 1.75 million. Bama easily doubles that. If bama hired marshall. And miss st hired howland. Tennessee needs to take a hard look at what is going on.

We've proven we'll pay around $3mil for a bball coach, but only if they prove it in Orange. Heaven forbid we hire a proven, seasoned winner from the get go.

I spent the week in AL for work and his name was mentioned often on sports radio, and in a confident sense. Saban and football have done wonders for their coffers. The money is there to spend.

Then why don't they build a new basketball arena like Auburn did? Coleman Coliseum is one of the oldest and worst in the SEC (Ole Miss, Vandy and Georgia are the only schools that have clearly worse arenas). I'm not as convinced that they are as committed to basketball as some others want to think...or that they would be as attractive to an elite coach as their fans want to believe.

I hate Coleman as a basketball venue. But Bama's practice and training facilities are awesome. So there is plenty to work with for a good coach.

I'm just relaying what was said ad nauseum this week in the state. I don't know if a big-name coach will come in or not, but the word is they're willing to make folks tell them no. I think it'll ultimately end up being Prohm.

I swear to god if Alabama hires Gregg Marshall, I'm going postal.

Same here...I wanted him over Martin and Tyndall (and Bruce round 2). I feel UT is twice the program in basketball as Alabama. If they spend and land Greg Marshall, I'll be pissed.

So Bama is looking to make some noise in the bball world? If true, their AD seems to have it all figured out. We'll see if they actually pull the trigger and shell out some "real" money for a basketball coach.

Sadly Grant or Pelphrey will get the UF gig.

You think JF makes the "mistake" of hiring one of 2 guys that he's seen struggle firsthand against the same competition he'd be facing? It would be interesting to see what Shaka could do outside of VCU. It didn't translate so well for Capel and Grant.

The thing that makes me sickest? The article from CBS sports says:

The sources said Alabama's administration is determined, one way or another, to make a big hire to replace Anthony Grant in response to Auburn employing Bruce Pearl last March, and Marshall is essentially alone atop the wish-list. Alabama cannot offer Marshall great basketball tradition, school officials understand. But one source said they plan to pitch "piles of money, an athletic department with a culture of winning and every resource he needs to compete with anybody on a national level." It's possible football coach Nick Saban could eventually be involved in what would amount to a high-profile recruitment.

"Alabama is gonna go big," one source said.

WHY WON'T WE DO THIS???

Is it simply because of buy outs? Sickening.

The Bama-Auburn rivalry continues to be the best thing that ever happened to those schools.

Hart is just like Hamilton in that he likes budget hires and wants to be regarded as a genius for finding great coaches at rock bottom rates.

He got lucky with Butch Jones (who still needs to win this year) and Tyndall is a great coach with a very murky future. Unfortunately, should Tyndall be let go, I predict Hart will strike out on his replacement. He will probably hire a cheap mid-major guy who has made the tournament a couple of times without making any runs and averages 22-23 wins a year against small-time competition.

The only thing I wonder about with Marshall is since he's pretty well know for having a prickly personality, how is that going to go when the promises fade and his program is clearly low on the totem pole.

I'm sure they'll throw money at him, but I don't think it's a clear, fail-proof hire.

It's not the buyouts which may total less than 10 million over close to a decade. It's the money that was diverted from athletics to the whiny sniveling pencil necks who were trying to justify masters degree programs for basket weaving. No way in hell that would happen at UF or Bama hence they have tens of millions in reserve and the Vols AD has less than 2 million. The gold ole boys gave away the farm to save their jobs for a couple of years after Fulmer jumped the shark.

Couple of writers think it could go to one of those two guys or Matt McCall as dark horse candidate.

Rumor today that Foley has spoken to reps for both Smart and Archie Miller.

Celtics (who's an AAU coach and connected at UF) posted: know there has been a lot of speculation on him leaving, maybe as soon as this offseason.....as I have said a lot the last 1-2 years, he will be leaving at some point soon for the NBA....he really wants to coach there and see if he can have success there like he has in CBB...and as more and more teams are moving toward a high screen roll, team oriented style of offense that places a premium on shooting, it is the perfect time....that said, I think it is at least 80% or better he is here next season, he is not leaving the NBA unless a really really good situation opens up (young talent, mid size market, good management/ownership, good trade assets, etc)......I do know he and the staff have been out recruiting a lot since the season ended....as far as replacements, if it is this offseason, I have been told the clear #1 guy on the list is Archie Miller....many actually think he is the better coach over his brother Sean, just needs a big time school to coach and recruit at....UF would be a great fit....Sean already more or less took over for a legend in Tucson (Lute Olson) so the Miller boys are not afraid of a challenge....after that the list is pretty murky...."

Gotta love a coach only wanting to take over a good situation. If you want to prove yourself you would take over any situation assuming it's somewhere you want to live.

On another note, if CDT is axed, and we do anything before showing up on CAM's doorstep with a 5 yr contract for $2m/year already drawn up then I'll accept that UT is not serious about bball.

I mean what successful college coach would leave for the
Knicks or Sixers? Career suicide.

I think them going for Greg Marshal is brilliant, but truly nothing more than a dick measuring contest with Auburn, seeing as that's the only reason they are going big themselves.

Marshall isn't leaving....look at all the jobs he has turned down in the past few years alone!! He THE man at WSU especially after beating Kansas...WSU is a much better basketball situation
