Well, we do have that series with Cal... I wouldn't call it embarassing. I'm pretty certain Tedford will keep things rolling in Berkley.

All of those teams are pretty good. Not all of them are great, but theyre all pretty good. UCF is even going to be improving quite a great deal over the next year or two... you'll see. Memphis is no slouch... they've beaten Ole Miss the past several years. Northern Illinois beat Bama a couple years ago. While they might not be BCS schools, theyre all pretty good football programs. You cant really say that about Duke.

UCF sucked last year, but they will be turning the corner soon. They've gotten some very good recruits. I guess you dont remember the Air Force team of a couple years ago that won the Commander's Cup and led the nation in rushing among other accomplishments.

Got Twelve:
For the most part you're taking this like a man. There's no need to be embarrassed to play NI, Duke, or any of the bottom feeders.
You can't play Auburn, LSU, UT, Arkansas, and one or two of the other SEC power houses every year and schedule 3 or 4 top 25 non-conference games to boot. It just isn't done. I'd like to see a super conference where the bottom feeders get the boot and the super conference played only the top 50 teams.
That'll never happen. So, in the meantime, we all shedule a cup cake or two from time to time.
The part of this that has to be hard for Bama fans to swallow is the part about how much respect UA has lost due to not being able to demand home and home series with the likes of Duke.
The irony of it all is; Duke used to be a great program. Way back when they used to have their way with the Vols. We used to play them a lot. 28 games in all and the record stands at 14/12/2 with UT having the edge.
In the last 30 years or so, we pretty well owned them, but they did beat us in 88 when Spurrier was there. They also beat us in 82 by 1 point.
If Bama doesn't take them seriously it could be an upset. They did beat Clemson last year.
I've always been a huge fan of Bama. They've always been my 2nd team after the Vols, but all the nasty stuff has really hurt.
I'd like to see the ugly stuff put away and the respect restored like it should be.
It's only a few media swine like Finebaum, greedy lawyers like Gallion, and idiots on the Internet from both fan pools that has turned the rivalry nasty. Most of the better educated fans still respect each other.
Regards,

Why play all of these tough teams when you get no respect for it. Look at USC, Oklahoma, Cal. The teams they play are crap. SEC teams get no respect at all for their schedule. I bet we get Urbans respect this year. They were talking on ESPN the other day about how USC had a tough away game at Oregon St. Who? I mean I don't know if they just ran out of stuff to talk about or they were really serious. I hope not. I just say if nobody respects the top tier teams we do play, then save the injuries and schedule a few knock off teams. :thefinger:

If Bama goes anywhere this year, it will be on the backs of their defense. Croyle looked pretty bad today in their scrimmage. Went just 16 of 34 for 137 yards and threw at least 1 INT.

Wha? I didn't realize that this was possible. Props for having the guts to say that, even though I can't for the life of me understand how.

The first college football game I ever saw was Tennessee vs Alabama in 1969. I was on a recruiting trip with a bunch of high school seniors. The game was at Birmingham. I'll never forget it. Bama was a team I always followed growing up. While my dad and I were huge Vol fans, we both respected the UT/UA rivalry and held the Tide in high regard. I have many friends in Alabama. I did business with a lot of Tide fans throughout the years.
The UT/UA rivalry used to be all about what was right with college football.
Now, a few people who are not really associated with either univeristy have created hard feelings amongst much of the side-walk alumni. The real fans stay above all of that though.
The Vols hammered the Tide that day, by the way.
