Hey guys,

just wondering if there is the same bandwagon culture in college sports that there is in pro sports?

Surely most of you support Tennessee because you went to the Uni or know somebody who does/did? So why would anyone change team?

Does it happen as much? Since in Pro sports it doesn't matter really who you support, but if people have a physical connection to a team because they went there to study surely people would never change?

I suppose the other question is, what percent of college football fans went to a Uni with a athletics program and how many just watch it because it's a local sport?

Do you see a lot of people wearing Bama hats now, that didn't when they were not winning every year?

Cheers! VFL

I live in Alabama but i became a Tennessee fan when i was 9 because of Heath Shuler and ive been one ever since. I wont change to any other team. In pro sports, the only team im loyal to is the Atlanta Braves. In NFL and NBA i follow certain players, IMO that's not bandwagoning.

Something like 30% of the people in Knoxville have a college degree. So odds are there's a sizable percentage of fans at games that never attended UT.

But then what percentage of people from Knoxville support the Vols? Is Knoxville like Green Bay, where everyone seems to support the local team and it's noticeable?

It's impossible not to notice across East Tennessee. There are people who support different teams, obviously, but love for the Tennessee Volunteers is pretty damn widespread.

An overwhelming majority of residents in the state are Tennessee Volunteer fans, but the most diehard concentration is in East Tennessee as opposed to Middle and West.

I live in middle TN about 50 miles east of Nashville. I see way too many Alabama and Florida hats and license plates around here.

Yes. Bandwagon fans are alive and well.

I think the bandwagon effect is more prevelant in college than in the pros. That's just my opinion.

I agree that bandwagon fans exist because, well, duh. But seeing fans of other SEC teams in Middle Tennessee isn't that unusual. The University of Alabama pulls a surprisingly high number of students from high schools in the Nashville Metropolitan Area, and that area is also a pretty popular destination for college students across the SEC post-graduation.

I think it'd be a lot more unusual and a better sign of bandwagon behavior to see, say, a bunch of Washington State fans popping up in your hometown if they somehow managed to win a bunch of titles in the next few years.

There is a huge form of bandwagoning in the South. It's all of this "team SEC" crap like somehow it helps Tennessee if one of the teams we compete with win a championship.

I never went to UT. Joined the Army right out of HS but I was raised a UT fan by my grandfather and uncle.

It does force us to step up our game, though. The increase in big-name hires and facility renovations across this conference is impossible to not notice. The only problem is that the ball hasn't bounced our way lately. I really like Butch so far. He's a relentless recruiter, and let's not kid ourselves: highly ranked recruiting teams tend to win the bulk of their games.
