Bandwagoning in the NCAA???

But then what percentage of people from Knoxville support the Vols? Is Knoxville like Green Bay, where everyone seems to support the local team and it's noticeable?
Pretty sure it's different in the UK, where college sports probably don't dominate everyday lives, if they're noticed at all, other than the Oxford-Cambridge boat race. It's all pro sports there.

Here, we have both, and if you don't have a pro team in your town/region, but you do have a college with big-time sports, college sports fill that spot for sports fans who want to root for something.

In Knoxville, you don't schedule a wedding in the fall on a Saturday without consulting the UT game schedule. Seriously. It gets really weird when you want to gamble on having a wedding on game day, but you don't know ahead of time when the game will be played, because the TV networks haven't picked the time yet. It's almost as bad with away games, because you know that a substantial number of guests would rather be watching the game, and probably will be as soon as they can find a screen at the reception.

I now live in the San Francisco Bay area, and around here the sports are the SF Giants, the Oakland A's, the SF 49'ers, the Oakland Raiders, the Golden State Warriors, even the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS soccer) and Sharks (ice hockey), all the above in no previous order, and THEN comes Stanford, UC Berkeley and the other California and Pac-10 college teams. Pro sports dominate the news and the conversations, and while college sports are considered fun, those who paint their bodies and whatnot in college colors are regarded with gentle amusement.

Heck, I grew up in Hawaii, and we got our excitement from high school sports, due to the complete absence of pro teams (UH wasn't much back then.) Bookies ran betting lines on HS sports, and the high school football games were televised.

This was back before satellite TV, and films of mainland sports were flown in on United Air Lines and watched the next day.

Bottom line, I guess: sports nuts will go whole hog over whatever the most exciting local sport might be.

It does force us to step up our game, though. The increase in big-name hires and facility renovations across this conference is impossible to not notice. The only problem is that the ball hasn't bounced our way lately. I really like Butch so far. He's a relentless recruiter, and let's not kid ourselves: highly ranked recruiting teams tend to win the bulk of their games.

I agree with you, I just don't think this requires me to root for Bama, Florida, Vandy, auburn or Kentucky. Ever.

I don't bandwagon.

My current favorite football team is Bama.
And I was a huge UK fan in basketball but now I am a diehard Louisville Cards fan.

Didn't go to UT. Raised a UT fan since birth though. Grandparents have been attending games since the 50s.

Also, being from East TN means that almost everyone I grew up with was UT fans as well.

Kenny Chesney is a poser. He ain't country. Ask anybody that grew up around him, he's a preppy douche.
