Bang Shootie conversation

If it’s a 16 a5 it could be valuable. Not that you’d ever sell it.

...from my cold dead hand.

I've been looking into it some today. Manufactured in St. Louis and has an "x" serial number, which did not distinguish between a5 and sweet 16. They didn't start engraving "sweet sixteen" on them til the late 40's or early 50's. Browning's website doesn't cover the "x" serial numbers, but you can call and they'll trace it and send a letter with information on the gun and date/location of original sale (for a minimal fee).

Slice, my Hunter Arms 12 gauge has fixed full and modified 26" barrels. In your opinion, can it be effectively used to hunt turkeys?

I've been looking at O/Us for hunting. Some O/U "meat guns" are of ambidextrous design and relatively affordable with five chokes. New 12-gauge Stevens Savage 555s can still be had for ~$700. New 12-gauge CZ Redhead Premiers have crept up over $1K. Used ones with all their chokes and in very good to excellent condition can be found for <= $900. Given my long gun leftiness, if I'm going to acquire another shotgun, an O/U may be my best option. What say you?

only ever owned one O/U, which was a junk Boito 20 ga. It was what I could afford at the time and it is long gone. the primary downside of hunting with an O/U is the weight of carrying two barrels, which is why most upland game bird O/Us are lighter weight. I assume most turkey hunters want to use 3" magnum shells and doubt those would feel good on the shoulder with a lighter weight shotgun. If you plan to stay in one spot and let the turkeys come to you, I guess weight would not be so much of a big deal. They are pretty guns.

Effective?
Meh.
Why when there are so many other options available for a small amount of money. You can get a single shot 410 Mossberg for 200$ brand new

Thanks for the input. The O/Us that I've mentioned are lighter upland gamebird guns. They take 3" shells. Reviewers of both have noted the recoil of the 12 gauge is less than expected. Then, there's the use of a padded vest. Hunting isn't skeet shooting. I don't expect to shoot 20+ shells in an hour. I've got a 12 gauge SxS. I know what it's like. Having a 12 gauge, I'd prefer another one. One gauge shells to buy. Use 'em in either gun. Shooting lefty limits my options. Slice, I wish I had the confidence to hunt turkey with a single shot Mossberg. To me, that second barrel is insurance.

I admit that I've not hunted turkeys before. Quail and dove, and the last time was a quite a few years ago. Skydiving occupied my free time for a couple of decades.

Slice, you're not that far from me. Let's meet for lunch in Chattanooga one weekend this month and talk guns and Vols. Suggest a date, time, and place. If any other VNsters want to join, that's OK, but I'd be happy just to meet you, you and your wife, or you and your family.
