Barnes has got to play Vescovi now.

Can anybody state the requirements of clear to play or the reasons he may not be Cleared?

Eligibility?
Enrolled?
SAT Scores?
Amateur Status?
TimeLine?

Maybe CRBs knows something we don't as to the reason he stated SV will not play this year...

I look at this as being no different than the Stokes situation. Am I missing something?

Vescovi is on track to be cleared. If he does not play it will be because the cost of him burning a redshirt now won't produce enough benefits this year. How well TN is playing a few weeks or a month from now will be a significant consideration. How quickly he learns the Barnes system will be significant. How effective his teammates will be stepping into larger roles will be significant. The win-loss record and odds of making or missing the NCAAT field will be significant.

If what was shown was a representative sample of Vescovi then yes - he needs to play whether Barnes wants him to or not. This team is pretty darn good already and when it struggling coincided with when Turner struggled. We aren't very physical, and don't rebound that well, but we are athletic and skillful on the inside. Pons can somewhat score at will - if he gets the ball anywhere within about 10 feet - and is shooting at a 52% clip and what can I say about Fulky. Second on the team in steals and teams have been forced to double team him …… and he is still hitting 67% of his shots. He and they have made him into a really great threat offensively - so a distributor who can bury some 3's would be a great addition.
He has a natural aptitude for the point position - and is, as others have indicated, advanced beyond his years. It's also not rocket science - Memphis could scout us for 2 days and figure out what we are trying to do, so a great point guard on a team that has no point guards and in fact very few guards at all … could and should use him immediately.

Decent chance he goes on in 2 or 3 years so use him or lose him.

I do like his tape alot. He sees the play before it happens. He may hit some of our guys in the head.

Agreed on all points. What a lot of people don't get is that Turner was not at all himself this year, due to injury. Vescovi could actually be an upgrade to this year's Turner. I am not saying he will be , but it's possible.

That's a good point. Not only does Vescovi need to quickly learn Barnes Ball, but the roster will also have to quickly adapt to him. JJJ had been working out with his teammates for months and even after that some where having some difficulty recognizing when he was about to feed them the ball.

TN probably did all they could for him. Not every doctor has the best equipment. Some people don’t really figure out what’s the matter till they go to the freaking Mayo- Clinic. Barnes isn’t the type to play an injured player knowingly that it could mess him up even further. He’s not the doc. Barnes will ask “can he still play” and the doc will say “yes”. Did the NFL Indy docs botch Andrew Lucks career? Nah.. he played till it was HIS decision.
So, the UT doctors don’t have MRIs? LOL

Bone clearly knew what the remaining guys were capable of and saw it was going to be a rough year. My guess is he didn't feel like another year at UT would help his stock so he jumped into the draft. In hindsight, it appears it was the correct decision. Would have been great to have him around for another season, but I can understand his decision.
You think? He would be the featured part of this team had he stayed.

If he gets cleared he will play. He is a 4 star pg and we have a point guard depleted roster. James is our only pg and he is more of a combo guard, so if Vescovi gets cleared he will get minutes.

It's all on whether he stays 4 years AFTER we redshirt him. If he isnt then might as well play him.

He does have some limitations for the NBA but his highlights are awesome

Barnes is playing chess. Plotting his moves 4 ahead

I was reading about him and this guy is not like a normal freshman. He was playing in a league against top competition and was coached by an NBA guy. I know Barnes is tough on PG's but I think this guy can pick up the schemes better than a freshman and help us out a lot sooner that later. Hate to waste one yr of his eligibility but its necessary now with LT gone.

Barnes is our coach and he's a good one. But, to exercise my sacred Volnation right to second-guess our coaches, I believe Barnes should clear the bench this season and build depth for the future -- even at the risk of not making the tourney. This is clearly a textbook rebuilding year, especially now with Lamonte gone. I believe Barnes should find the best 10 players and make them our base rotation for every game for the rest of the season. He seems stubbornly committed to a base rotation of seven players, which will definitely not get us very far in the postseason anyway. Look at our bench production thus far this season. Why not build depth now for next year and beyond by giving the 10 best players serious minutes every game? Baptize them by fire, let them take their lumps and build some scar tissue. We may have to take some painful losses along the way but that is to be expected anyway in this rebuilding year.

Has anyone told the coach yet? After all, it will take at least a practice two two running the team so coach better get right on it. :D

Another reason to put him in coach. Everybody, except for Bowden, will (can) now return next year. Be good to get a head start on working together.

I really am torn. This season will be far more fun to follow if SV plays. But if he doesn't leave early it would be great having him around as a redshirt senior.

He could be an upgrade in some ways. But, man even an injured Lamonte was stellar on defense. Especially on- ball defense. In my opinion, that is where his loss will hurt us most considering his injury. Now if his shoulder was fine, we’d miss him tremendously on both sides of the ball.

Yep

Turner is a massive loss on Defense and can’t be replaced in any kind of comparable way

At the risk of sounding douchey...what do you think he's been doing thus far this season?? I imagine if Barnes thought he had 10 guys that he could rotate then he'd be doing it.

Yes Turner has had a bad shooting % but all the players look up to him for leadership. If there were 3 seconds on the clock next game and we are down 1 in a timeout .The thing going thru players minds would be , man I wish LT was here.

As I wrote, he seems stubbornly committed to a rotation of seven. To your point, I don't think he trusts anyone yet beyond those seven. I have since been told that we only have eight eligible players. If true, that explains it. I won't ask how our basketball program got to the point where we only have eight eligible players.

Transfers and early entry into the NBA?

I would think that clearing Vescovi is more of a routine process for the AA. As long as the UTAD doesn't drop the ball when submitting the paperwork, I wouldn't think that it would be anything like requesting a waiver or appealing a decision on unique situations. It doesn't seem like there is a lot of judgement required in Vescovi's case. Of course there were issues clearing Turner in 2015 and Kentucky turned in TN and Bernard King had to miss some games in 1974. There are probably other examples in between those... the NCAA is anything but consistent.
TRUTH. NCAA not exactly a bastion of fairness.
